Obama pardons pair of gobblers for Thanksgiving (AP)

WASHINGTON ? With a wave of his hand, President Barack Obama on Wednesday gave two plump turkeys a Thanksgiving reprieve, noting that without his intervention, "they'd end up next to the mashed potatoes and stuffing."

The official national Thanksgiving turkey is a 19-week-old, 45-pound bird named Liberty. Its alternate, also spared, is a turkey of the same age and size named Peace.

Liberty sat calmly as Obama, accompanied by daughters Sasha and Malia, offered a blessing, his hand over the turkey's head. Obama said Liberty had the distinction of being "the luckiest bird on the face of the earth."

"Right now, he's also probably one of the most confused," Obama said.

Obama jokingly cast his pardon as yet another of his "We Can't Wait" initiatives. "Recently, I've been taking a series of executive actions that don't require congressional approval," the president said. "Well, here's another one. We can't wait to pardon these turkeys."

In a more sober tone, Obama called on Americans to remember the meaning of Thanksgiving and to be mindful of those who have less.

"Let's think about those who can't spend the holiday with their loved ones, especially the members of our military serving overseas," he said. "I'd like to thank all our men and women in uniform, and their families, for their incredible service and devotion."

Later Wednesday, the president, his daughters, first lady Michelle Obama, her mother, Marian Robinson, and her nephew Avery Robinson delivered two not-so-lucky birds to the Capital Area Food Bank, a local food pantry where the first family was packing and distributing food bags for people in need.

The president doled out packets of baby carrots as he exchanged "Happy Thanksgiving" greetings and small talk with patrons. Sasha, at Obama's side, handed out small boxes of White House M&Ms.

The family was accompanied by players from the Oregon State basketball team, which is coached by the first lady's brother, Craig Robinson. The team is in the Washington area to play Towson University, near Baltimore, on Saturday.

Liberty and Peace were selected from among 30 turkeys raised and groomed by student members of the Future Farmers of America in Willmar, Minn., for a potential presidential amnesty.

The birds' home state of Minnesota will surely spur analysis about the value of sparing turkeys from a political battleground state ahead of an election year. But the motives might be simpler ? Minnesota produces more turkeys than any other U.S. state.

Obama said the students trained the turkeys to face the White House press corps by exposing them to loud noises and flash bulbs.

"They also received the most important part of their media training, which involved learning how to gobble without really saying anything," he said.

Liberty and Peace will retire to the historic home of George Washington in nearby Mount Vernon, Va. Obama said Liberty first will have to finish "a round of cable hits and Sunday shows."

The turkeys will endure further celebrity during "Christmas at Mount Vernon," a special program that runs through Jan. 6. Following the holidays, the two birds will live in a custom-made enclosure at Mount Vernon's livestock facility.

The birds are larger than the average U.S.-bred turkey. According to the Agriculture Department, the U.S. turkey industry produces more than 250 million birds a year, with each live bird averaging about 25 pounds.

Penn State players lived by special rules: ex-official (Reuters)

STATE COLLEGE, Pa (Reuters) ? Penn State University football players received special treatment compared to other students when accused of violating school rules, the school's ex-chief disciplinarian said on Tuesday.

Longtime football coach Joe Paterno and then-university President Graham Spanier were involved in years of debate that ended in changing the rules for how football players were disciplined, said Vicky Triponey, the vice president for student affairs from 2003 to 2007.

"The consequence of these accommodations put us in the position of treating football players more favorably than other students accused of violating the community standards as defined by the student code of conduct," Triponey said in a statement e-mailed to Reuters on Tuesday.

Her comments dealt another blow to a university and once-storied football program now reeling from allegations of child sexual abuse against a former assistance coach and an alleged cover-up.

Former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky faces 40 counts of sexually molesting boys over a 15-year period. He was charged by a grand jury on November 5 and has denied any wrongdoing.

The case has stunned the prestigious university, the state of Pennsylvania and the world of college athletics, spawning a host of investigations as well as soul-searching among athletes, coaches, donors, parents and college officials.

Paterno, 84, the winningest coach in major college football, and Spanier were fired by trustees this month for failing to tell police about the allegations of sex abuse. The former athletic director and a top finance official face perjury charges in the case.

The scandal has raised concerns that a culture of special treatment for the football program under Paterno allowed Sandusky's alleged conduct to continue for years.

Spanier and Paterno made "suggestions, requests and at times demands" to change the process or soften punishment for players who had broken rules, said Triponey, who now heads special projects for a non-profit in Charleston, South Carolina.

A university spokesman was not immediately available to comment.

NEW CASES?

In a sign that the charges against Sandusky could expand, the Harrisburg Patriot-News reported that the state's Office for Chidren, Youth and Families had opened two cases of alleged child abuse against Sandusky.

The cases were reported less than 60 days ago and are still in the initial stages of investigation, the newspaper said.

If the cases are found to be credible, they would be the first known ones to be reported since Sandusky's arrest that involve current children, the Patriot-News said.

Spokesmen for the Department of Public Welfare and for the Pennsylvania attorney general's office declined to comment.

Sandusky's lawyer, Joe Amendola, told ABC News on Tuesday that he expected more charges could be filed against his client after the storm of publicity surrounding the case.

"My concern is if they bring new charges based upon new people coming forth, that bail's going to be set, and he's going to wind up in jail," he said.

COURT DATE CHANGED

Sandusky's preliminary hearing in Center County court was also moved back on Tuesday to December 13 from December 6, and the court's website cited "logistical needs" for the delay.

An avalanche of media is expected for the hearing in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania.

In a move related to the legal case, all of Center County's Court of Common Pleas judges recused themselves from the Sandusky trial, the Administrative Office of Pennsylvania courts said in a statement.

The recusals were aimed at avoiding any appearance of conflict of interest regarding Penn State, Sandusky or The Second Mile, the local charity Sandusky founded, it said.

Sandusky is alleged to have met all his victims through the charity, which he founded in 1977.

McKean County Senior Judge John Cleland, a former chairman of the Interbranch Commission on Juvenile Justice, will take over the case.

The December 13 preliminary hearing will be handled by an out-of-county jurist, Westmoreland County Senior District Judge Robert Scott. He replaced the district judge who set bail when Sandusky was arrested, Leslie Dutchcot of State College, who had ties to The Second Mile.

Also on Tuesday, the Penn State Nittany Lions' interim head coach, Tom Bradley, said he doubted talk that the football team could be kept out of a post-season bowl game this year because of the Sandusky scandal.

"I have not heard that from anybody," he told a news conference, adding that Penn State's acting President Rodney Erickson "has talked to people; that's not the case."

The nation's weather (AP)

Unsettled weather conditions will persist in the southeastern quadrant of the nation on Tuesday as a frontal boundary extends from the Mid-Atlantic through the Southern Plains with waves of low pressure. Moisture pooling along this system will produce rain and thunderstorms in these regions through the afternoon. Strong storms from parts of southeastern Texas through the southeastern states and into the southern Ohio Valley may turn severe with damaging wind gusts and even tornadoes. This system is expected to transition by Tuesday evening, extending from the Mid-Atlantic through the Ohio Valley as a warm front and extending from the Mid-Mississippi Valley through the Southern Plains as a cold front.

In the West, the second and much stronger frontal system of this week's series will move into the Pacific Northwest late Monday night into Tuesday. This system created strong coastal wind and spread light to moderate rain and mountain snow across the region. Periods of heavy snow with accumulations of 1 to 2.5 feet are expected in the northern Cascades. New snow amounts of 8 to 16 inches are expected in central Washington, while up to 10 inches blankets the Olympic Mountains. Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Monday have ranged from a morning low of -4 degrees at Hibbing, Minn. to a high of 93 degrees at Austin Bergstrom, Texas.

Apple replacing 1st-generation iPod nanos due to overheating issue (Digital Trends)

Does anyone still listen to their tunes on a 1st-generation iPod nano?

According to a statement posted on the Apple website on Friday, the battery inside some of the early nanos could overheat, posing a potential safety risk.

???This issue has been traced to a single battery supplier that produced batteries with a manufacturing defect. While the possibility of an incident is rare, the likelihood increases as the battery ages,??

As a result, the Cupertino company has launched a worldwide replacement program for the affected devices, which concerns those bought between September 2005 and December 2006. The early nanos have a black or white plastic front and a silver metal back. Later versions have a metal front and back.

The device?s serial number, found on the back of the nano, will need to be provided to confirm whether or not it is included in the replacement program.

As MacRumors pointed out, such a program was started in South Korea in 2009 and Japan in 2010 for the exact same problem. Apparently those programs were set up as a result of pressure from regulators. It?s not certain what prompted the start of the worldwide replacement program, or why it didn?t begin earlier.

Anyone that sends in an affected nano will have to wait about six weeks for a replacement to turn up, though whether it?ll be the original nano with a new battery inside or the latest version of the device isn?t specified in the statement.

Apple is advising anyone with an affected iPod nano to stop using it.

(AP) ? A personal assistant-turned-personal manager to Michael Jackson said the King of Pop had been taking propofol as early as 1999, and that the singer was drugged up ahead of his 2001 30th anniversary concerts.

Frank Cascio, who became a family friend to Jackson at age 5 and eventually one of the singer's closest friends and employees, writes in a new book that he first noticed Jackson taking the drug Demerol while accompanying the singer on his "Dangerous" tour in 1993.

He writes in his new book, "My Friend Michael: An Ordinary Friendship with an Extraordinary Man," that Jackson started the first of two anniversary shows in 2001 an hour late as a result of being drugged up in his dressing room.

"My naive belief that Michael wouldn't let his medicine interfere with the show blew up in my face," Cascio writes. "I can't begin to describe my disappointment and panic at this moment."

The Associated Press bought an advance copy of the book, which is set for release Nov. 15 by William Morrow, an imprint of News Corp.'s HarperCollins.

Cascio became a friend of Jackson's after his father introduced him to the singer; Cascio's father worked at the Hemsley Palace in Manhattan, managing the hotel's towers and suites, where Jackson stayed. Following that, a 5-year-old Cascio and his younger brother Eddie, spent time with Jackson at his Neverland Ranch.

He says Jackson was first introduced to Demerol in 1984 when he burned his head during a Pepsi commercial shoot, and Cascio writes that he first noticed Jackson using the medicine on his "Dangerous" tour.

"Now, on tour, and again in deep physical pain, Michael turned back to those drugs," he wrote.

Cascio says Jackson also took propofol in 1999 in Munich when the singer was 50 feet in the air and instead of coming down slowly, the platform Jackson was on fell down. Cascio also writes that Jackson had taken Demerol to treat the skin disease vitiligo, and grew worried about his drug use.

"It had become clear to me that Michael's drug use was escalating," he wrote. Cascio said sometimes he paid doctors in cash "because all of Michael's medical issues had to be kept from the public and their cost off the books." He also said he had some of the prescriptions written out in his name.

"Over the years, I had grown accustomed to seeing doctors coming and going, particularly in late tours, when Michael was under great stress and needed help falling asleep."

Cascio said he wanted to seek out help, but didn't know who to turn to. Ahead of Jackson's 2001 anniversary shows, he said he spoke to Janet, Randy and Tito about their brother's drug use. He writes that Jackson's siblings approached him, but the singer "simply pushed them away."

Murray was convicted Monday of involuntary manslaughter for supplying the insomnia-plagued Jackson with the powerful operating-room anesthetic propofol to help him sleep as he rehearsed for his big comeback.

"But in the end, physical and mental anguish prevailed, and Michael died in his endless quest to attain some inner peace," Cascio writes.

"My Friend Michael" also takes a look at some of Jackson's personal and professional moments, providing a somewhat behind-the-scenes look at the King of Pop's life.

Cascio writes that he and Jackson "had gotten stoned on a few occasions up in the mountains," and that Jackson would drink wine out of juice bottles and soda cans.

Cascio and the singer grew close, and in 1993 when Jackson had been accused of child molestation charges, he asked the Cascio family to visit him in Israel while he was on tour. He later asked if the young boys could stay on tour with him.

"He went to my father and broke down crying," Cascio writes. "People might question my parents' judgment in sending two young boys off to spend time alone with a man who had been accused of molesting another boy. But to us, the suggestion that we were in any danger was completely absurd."

Jackson invited Cascio to work as his personal assistant a year after he graduated high school. He later became his personal manager.

Throughout the book, Cascio writes that Jackson never had sex with children, but had a love for them and wanted to father 10 kids in total.

Cascio says Princess Diana was at the top of Jackson's list of girls he wanted to date, and that the Jackson made out with one of his fan club members.

"He tended to like tall, slender women whom I'd describe as nerdy in a sexy way," he writes.

Cascio also said that Jackson used to claim that Omer Bhatti was his son, though Cascio did not believe him. Jackson later admitted that it wasn't true.

"By way of an explanation, Michael gave me the same reason he'd given for his marriages to Lisa Marie and Debbie Rowe. He needed to show the Saudi prince and the rest of the Arab business world that he had a family," Cascio writes.

When he worked as his personal manager, Cascio said he had to interfere when John McClain, now the co-executor of Jackson's estate, and the director of Jackson's "You Rock My World" music video, wanted the singer "to use makeup to darken Michael's skin for the video" and "to fill in his nose with putty." Cascio said Jackson locked himself in a bathroom and cried.

"They think I'm ugly?" Jackson asked. "They think I'm a freak, they think I'm a freak, they think I'm a freak."

Low levels of radioactive particles in Europe: IAEA

VIENNA | Fri Nov 11, 2011 12:26pm EST

VIENNA (Reuters) - Very low levels of radioactive iodine-131 have been detected in Europe but the particles are not believed to pose a public health risk, the U.N. nuclear agency said Friday, saying it was seeking to find the source.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Vienna-based U.N. watchdog, said it did not believe the radioactive particles were from Japan's stricken Fukushima nuclear power plant after its emergency in March.

Experts said the origin of the radiation -- which has been spreading for about two weeks -- remained a mystery but could come from many possible sources ranging from medical laboratories or hospitals to nuclear submarines.

The Czech Republic's nuclear security watchdog said it had tipped off the IAEA after detecting the radiation it thought was coming from abroad but not from a nuclear power plant. It suggested it may come from production of radiopharmaceuticals.

Germany's Environment Ministry said slightly higher levels of radioactive iodine had been measured in the north of the country, ruling out that it came from a nuclear power plant.

Hungary, Slovakia, Austria and Sweden also reported traces at very low levels that did not pose a health risk.

Iodine-131, linked to cancer if found in high doses, can contaminate products such as milk and vegetables.

Paddy Regan, a professor of nuclear physics at Britain's University of Surrey, said the suggestion that it may have leaked from a radiopharmaceuticals maker "sounds very sensible and totally reasonable."

He said since iodine was used in the treatment of thyroid conditions it was also likely that hospitals in many European countries would have it in their stores.

"It would be very unlikely for it to have come from Fukushima since the accident was so many months ago and iodine-131 has a brief half-life," he said.

Iodine-131 is a short-lived radioisotope that has a radioactive decay half-life of about eight days, the IAEA said.

Massimo Sepielli, head of the nuclear fission unit of Italy's national alternative energy body ENEA said any number of sources could be to blame for the readings.

"It could be coming from the transporting of (nuclear) material, it could come from a hospital ... it could even come from a nuclear submarine, even if it's a more complicated possibility ... but you can't rule that out."

CAREFULLY CONTROLLED

Professor Malcolm Sperrin, director of medical physics at Britain's Royal Berkshire Hospital, said any link with Fukushima was extremely unlikely.

"It is far more likely that the iodine may be as a result of excretion by patients undergoing medical treatment. Whilst such patients are carefully controlled, some release of iodine into the environment may be inevitable but would certainly be well below any limits where health detriment would even begin to be an issue for concern," he said.

The IAEA said the Czech Republic's nuclear safety body had informed it that "very low levels" of iodine-131 had been measured in the atmosphere over the country in recent days.

"The IAEA has learned about similar measurements in other locations across Europe," the brief statement said.

"The IAEA is working with its counterparts to determine the cause and origin of the iodine-131."

The Czech watchdog said it had detected iodine-131 at a number of monitoring stations since late October. It said there was no health risk from the iodine.

"It was detected by our radiation monitoring network, with probability bordering on certainty the source is abroad. It is iodine-131 and we have asked the IAEA if they know what the source could be," Czech State Office for Nuclear Safety chief Dana Drabova told Reuters.

Officials in Spain, Russia, Ukraine, Finland, France, Britain, Switzerland, Poland and Norway said they had not detected any abnormal radiation levels. Romania's watchdog said there had been no incident at the country's sole nuclear plant.

Austria's Environment Ministry said small levels were measured in the east and north of the Alpine country, saying the estimated dose level for the population was one 40,000th of the dose of radiation received in a transatlantic flight.

In the world's worst nuclear accident since Chernobyl in 1986, an earthquake followed by a massive tsunami overwhelmed the Fukushima plant in Japan, causing a reactor meltdown and leakage of radiation, including of iodine.

In the days and weeks after the accident, tiny amounts of iodine-131 believed to have come from Fukushima were detected as far away as Iceland and other parts of Europe, as well as in the United States.

Lohan is accused of grabbing his on-and-off girlfriend and pushing her down multiple times during an argument at her Tampa condo Sunday. The judge told Lohan to stay away from 28-year-old Kate Major.

Authorities say Lohan went to Major?s condo and that she decided to let him stay even though she had a temporary domestic violence injunction against him in Sarasota County.

Keystone XL process faces review

The US state department's handing of a request to build Keystone XL, a 1,600-mile (2,700km) oil pipeline, will be reviewed for wrongdoing.

Reports have surfaced that a company involved in the environmental review had listed developer TransCanada as a "major client".

The review decision comes a day after demonstrators protested against the pipeline plans outside the White House.

A review could potentially delay a final decision on the pipeline.

The state department is handling public consultations on the project as the pipeline would cross the US border with Canada, but the White House has made it clear that President Barack Obama will influence the final outcome.

The review request was led by Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Representative Steve Cohen of Tennessee, both Democrats.

"At a time when all credible scientific evidence and opinion indicate that we are losing the battle against global warming it is imperative that we have objective environmental assessments of major carbon-dependent energy projects," Mr Sanders said.

In an October letter, Mr Sanders and Mr Cohen specifically asked the state department's inspector general to look at all contractual or financial ties between the consultant, Houston-based Cardno Entrix and TransCanada.

They also asked for a review of state department emails related to a TransCanada lobbyist who had worked in Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's 2008 presidential campaign.

TransCanada, which is seeking permission to build the pipeline from Alberta to the Gulf coast in Texas, said it welcomed the review.

"We conduct ourselves with integrity and in an open and transparent manner. We are certain that the conclusion of this review will reflect that," spokesman James Millar told the Associated Press news agency.

Pollution and political risks

Environmentalists are opposed to the Keystone XL project because of the method used for extracting petroleum from Alberta's oil sands.

They are also concerned by the risk of pollution on the pipeline route.

The proposed pipeline would pass south from Alberta through the US states of Montana, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas and Oklahoma before ending up at refineries in Texas.

Correspondents say the decision to allow the project or not is fraught with political risk for Mr Obama.

If he rejects it, he could be accused of destroying jobs. But allowing it to go ahead could lose him the support of activists who helped propel him to the White House, they note.

On Sunday, protesters formed a human chain around the White House, with some carrying an inflatable replica of a pipeline on their shoulders.

"We have to leave the tar sands oil in the ground. That's the only solution if we are going to save the planet," protester Martin Springhetti told AP.

Sediment Run-off at Record Levels into the Chesapeake Bay, by the Numbers (ContributorNetwork)

It seems Tropical Storm Lee has caused greater damage to the Chesapeake Bay than originally suspected. The Conowingo Dam, near Darlington, Md., and on the Susquehanna River allowed 4 million tons of sediment to get through the gates, bringing four times the amount normally spilled into the Bay in only four days.

Satellite pictures show a Bay that should normally be blue-green and is now brownish through most of surface from sediment.

Here are some of the facts about the dam and its environs.

3: Ranking of measured rain on Chesapeake Bay on Sept. 9 as caused by Tropical Storm Lee.

160 million: Tons of sand, clay and mud built up behind the dam.

3 million: Tons of the runoff could wind up in the Bay annually.

1.4 million: Dollars for a study called the "Lower Susquehanna River Watershed Assessment - Phase I," that has the intent of devising a solution to the growing sediment problem. The study will also look into sediment at three hydroelectric dams upstream of Conowingo.

572: Megawatts of electricity the Conowingo Hydroelectric Generation station can generate. The station has 11 units and has provided electricity to the area since 1928, according to Exelen Hydro.

30 to 40: Percent of oxygen levels the Maryland Department of Natural Resources found in the Maryland portion of the Bay.

60: Percent of the Bay's freshwater provided by the Susquehanna.

Ronaldo leads Madrid to 7-1 win; Friedel excels

Cristiano Ronaldo

updated 8:51 p.m. ET Nov. 6, 2011

BARCELONA, Spain - Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat trick and winger Angel Di Maria set up three goals to steer Spanish leader Real Madrid to a 7-1 win over 10-man Osasuna on Sunday.

Madrid's seventh consecutive league win lifted it three points ahead of defending champion Barcelona, which tied Athletic Bilbao 2-2. Valencia is four points back.

Di Maria set up goals by Ronaldo, Pepe and fellow Argentina international Gonzalo Higuain to increase his league-leading assist total to 10 before halftime.

Osasuna played with 10 men from early in the second half and Ronaldo scored two more to record his fourth three-goal game in the league this season before substitute Karim Benzema capped the rout with a late brace.

"My goals are not important, what counts is that the team wins," said Ronaldo, who has scored 17 goals in all competitions. "I am happy to have scored but also because the team is playing well."

Lionel Messi's stoppage-time goal salvaged a 2-2 draw for Barcelona. Midfielder Ander Herrera put Bilbao ahead in the 20th minute at San Mames stadium before Cesc Fabregas drew the visitors even with a header four minutes later.

Bilbao appeared set to get the win after Gerard Pique scored an own goal in the 80th, but Messi slotted home his league-leading 14th goal in the 91st to split the points. He's one goal ahead of Ronaldo.

Also, Sporting Gijon drew 2-2 at Zaragoza, while Racing Santander at Granada finished 0-0.

Osasuna, which was missing nine first team players from injuries and suspensions, had already lost 8-0 at Barcelona earlier this season.

Before the game, Ronaldo paraded his Golden Boot trophy for Europe's top scorer last season to the 83,000-seat Santiago Bernabeu stadium, which was full despite a first ever midday Sunday kickoff.

Di Maria set up Madrid's 23rd-minute opener when he picked out Ronaldo at the near post with a cross for the Portugal forward to flick into the net.

Osasuna midfielder Raul Garcia caught Madrid's defenders arguing with the referee when he took a free kick quickly and Ibrahima Balde slotted the ball under goalkeeper Iker Casillas to level the score in the 30th.

But any thoughts of an upset quickly evaporated as four minutes later Di Maria sent in another cross for Pepe to head home at the far post. The 23-year-old Di Maria then capped his playmaking display in the 40th when he slid the ball into the area for Higuain to curl into the right side of the net.

Di Maria was taken off on a stretcher for an apparent leg injury early in the second half, but Madrid continued to roll when Ronaldo fired in a penalty in the 54th after defender Eneko Sartustegi was sent off with his second booking for fouling Mesut Oezil in the area.

LONDON (AP) ? American goalkeeper Brad Friedel made a number of crucial saves to help Tottenham beat Fulham 3-1 Sunday and stay level on points with fourth-place Chelsea in the Premier League.

Tottenham took a 2-1 lead through goals by Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon before Friedel ? the Premier League's oldest player ? saved from Moussa Dembele, Chris Baird, Clint Dempsey, Bobby Zamora and Brede Hangeland to keep his team ahead.

Also Sunday, Bolton and Wolverhampton Wanderers each boosted their chances of avoiding relegation with home wins. Ribery twisted inside Dominik Reinhardt before slotting past the helpless Amsif to make it 2-0 in the 28th.

Manuel Neuer denied Augsburg an equalizer in the 83rd, with a great reflex save from Edmond Kapllani who was through one-on-one. In a nervous finish for the Bundesliga leader, Anatoliy Tymoshchuk received a straight red card for a dangerous tackle on Daniel Baier in injury time.

Chanderpaul's gritty ton fuels Windies fight back (Reuters)

NEW DELHI (Reuters) ? Shivnarine Chanderpaul enhanced his reputation as a nemesis for India with an unbeaten century to power West Indies to 256 for five on the opening day of the first test on Sunday.

The 37-year-old left-hander with an unorthodox stance shone in a 108-run fourth wicket stand with protege Kraigg Brathwaite (63) to bail out the team that was reeling at 72-3 soon after lunch.

Chanderpaul was batting on 111 off 167 balls at stumps, having hit seven fours and two sixes in what was his seventh century against India and 24th overall.

Carlton Baugh was giving him company on 19 as West Indies made a substantial recovery after the Indian spin duo of Pragyan Ojha (3-58) and debutant Ravichandran Ashwin (2-79) had mauled their top order.

West Indies skipper Darren Sammy's decision to bat first appeared to have boomeranged as his counterpart Mahendra Singh Dhoni exploited the visitors' spin frailty.

Ojha was brought into the attack in the 10th over and the left-arm spinner did not let his captain down.

Ojha dropped Kieran Powell (14) off his sixth delivery but made amends when he returned to trap the batsman leg before in his next over.

Ashwin was pressed into service for a two-pronged spin attack and Ojha struck again in the 24th over when the in-form Kirk Edwards (15) drove forwards to give the spinner a return catch.

Ashwin forced a delivery through Darren Bravo's (12) porous defence in the first over after lunch for his maiden test wicket before Brathwaite and Chanderpaul dug in.

"He played really well, playing it his way which is very patient. I think he did his job," Chanderpaul told reporters of teenager Brathwaite, who grew up idolising him.

Ojha eventually ended Brathwaite's 262-minute vigil by getting him stumped soon after the tea break and Ashwin had Marlon Samuels (15) caught behind.

Dhoni's role on both occasions made him the Indian stumper with the highest number of test dismissals (200) against his name.

"The stumping was amazing. I deceived him with flight and I really enjoyed the dismissal," Ojha said.

"They were trying to bat with lot of discipline. They were playing straight and with not too many fancy shots."

The spinner was full of admiration for Chanderpaul.

"More than his stance, he brings a lot of experience. We had a couple of half-chances while he was sweeping the ball. I enjoyed bowling to the legend. Hopefully I'll get him out tomorrow."
