Muskets and Monsters: Pulling teeth and other removals: The Secret ...

First there was Lost Boys, a brilliant modern take that I loved ? and still do ? enjoy thoroughly. Near Dark was more brooding, more serious and readdressed the balance of fear. But then Buffy the Vampire Slayer arrived, and while it was fun, vampires became dumb. After that it just went south and vampires have been denuded and diluted over the last two decades, turned into something that doesn?t resemble the fears of Matheson, Stoker or the makers of the Hammer movies.

The problem with using such an icon in fiction and movies is there are many vampire fans out there now, and when you read that vampires exist in a story it can attract readers of those stories. But when the vampires advertised in your book aren?t?their?version of what a vampire should be like, it?s gonna annoy the vampire faithful. Thanks to?True Blood, the?Twilight books, countless vampire-softcore porn both commercial and self-published, the modern vampire is a brooding teen-to-twenty something, immaculate, pretty, and charming, someone to be mooned over as well as feared. There are exceptions, books that have tried to get back to the bare bones or have a wit that makes the rise above the norm ? Kim Newman?s?Anno Dracula?being one, but I haven?t bought a vampire novel in years now; this creature and his troupes have become?trite.

~

When I wrote vampires into my Secret War books way back in 2001, I wanted to go back to the basics, the mythology of how the likes of Stoker could have dreamt them up ? to make them scary again. I wanted to tinker with their lore, make them more grounded and show how the legends were abused by chinese whispers. In most cases, the creatures in my books are referred to as vampires because the locals call them so, not due to the facts which are very un-vampire like. It?s this thing we do to transfer those anxieties that can?t be rationalised, onto our greatest feared myths because it?s more comforting to know our enemy than not. Thus the disappearances of hunters are down to Big Foot, the slaughter of live-stock has been caused by werewolves, and immortal, half-daemons are in fact vampires.

So what about my vampires? Well for a start, they?re called "vampyre", and for another they?re not about sex, which is bound to disappoint some. My vampyres aren?t afraid of crosses, do not suffer garlic, and a stake in the heart will just annoy them. Some will lose cohesion in direct sunlight (their skin is extremely sensitive, and with some, is almost gossamer), but all will perish once decapitated. They do not drink blood. They drink wine, or spirits, or ale, because it tastes good ? not because they need to. They eat because they can, not because they are hungry. They are undead. They are animated by the spirit of a daemon who does not need food, drink or blood to keep going. Their energy is a constant, coursing through the cells of the host, keeping them alive and immortal.

Really they are half-daemons, creature?s seduced by the promise of immortality but enslaved as servants to Count Ordrane of Draak, the super-half-daemon if you will, hell-bent on enslaving the rest of humanity. They are the Knights of the Lost, the brotherhood of half-daemons who believe they are masters of their own fates, when in fact their fate was sealed the moment they allowed themselves to be turned.

There is nothing glamorous about being one of these vampires. In one of the later Secret War books, Baron Horia tells Captain William Saxon that he made the choice after seeing his grandfather die of pestilence, slowing rotting away piece by piece. He did not wish to go the same way.

Fear drives my vampires to becoming the undead.

And really that?s what they are, undead, not truly alive or free. They exist only on the whim of daemons, and that is slavery not matter how you look at it. Is it tragic? For some, maybe, but it was their choice, their cowardice that made them so. It?s difficult to turn a man or woman into my vampires unless you really want to be one ? too difficult to be done on a whim as so often happens in the flood of vampire-related fiction these days. There is nothing romantic about it. No ideal that makes them attractive. The undead are na?ve at best; cowardly in the worst cases.

~

All this amounts to one thing: my vampires aren?t vampires in the modern sense, and its the modern sense that has won-out. I think there might have been room for my vampires say in the 70?s, and definitely when Stoker?s books came out, but not now. They just don?t fit the bill.

So during the revisions of the first book, I?ve deleted references to the name ?vampyre? and replaced them with the ?Knights of the Lost? and ?undead?; truer references.

The Secret War books aren?t vampire books. Not in any sense of the word. I don?t want to be seen as mis-selling a fantasy series by saying otherwise.

But more importantly, I think vampires have had their day. For me, in a modern world of serial killers, cannibals, flesh-eating viruses, zombies and religious fundamentalists, vampires no longer frighten me.

And that?s the scariest thing of all.

Estate Planning Basics

Post image for Estate Planning Basics

Estate planning might be the farthest thing from your mind, especially if you have a moderate to low income or net worth. In fact, many of us tend to view estate planning as something only rich people need to worry about, but in reality proper estate planning can make things easier for loved ones if you pass away unexpectedly and can also ensure that your wishes are carried out.

To start with, let?s establish what estate planning really is. You may not realize that it includes preparing a living will to handle tough topics like what to do if you are being kept alive by life support with no chance for recovery, as well as a traditional will to direct what happens to your personal property and assets, along with the guardianship of your minor children, if applicable. No matter how much money you have, these items are absolutely necessary.

If you have a high net worth, keep in mind that estates totaling more than $5 million will face hefty estate taxes under current law. This makes it essential to work with a trusted financial advisor to develop a plan that will shelter assets from taxes as much as possible.

For high net worth individuals who are married and have assets totaling $5 million or more, it can also be helpful to establish a credit shelter trust. This savvy investment move simply works to protect the assets of the first spouse to pass away, allowing the credit limit to be used.

Simply titling assets in joint name will not always help avoid probate, unless the joint account holder is your spouse. This means that assets held in joint name with a friend or relative are subject to the gift tax upon your death if the total value is more than $13,000. This amount is always subject to change, however, so be sure to stay current on changes in legislation.

Gifting assets to friends and relatives prior to your death is one of the simplest ways to whittle down your taxable assets. And as long as you stay within the gift tax exclusion limit, there will be no tax burden for anyone.

Also, make sure any retirement plans you own ? either individual or employer sponsored accounts ? have the proper beneficiary designations. For example, if your spouse has passed away, you will need to update the information and select a new beneficiary. If this person is not your spouse, be sure to look at whether or not the payout options are affected, and be sure to share this information with your new beneficiary.

Finally, no matter how much you are worth or how much you earn, selecting a good life insurance policy can make things much easier for those you leave behind. This is especially true for low to moderate-income households, where the expenses and loss of income associated with an unexpected death could cause bankruptcy, or at the very least, extreme financial hardship.

Rare Diseases: 5 Recent Reasons to Cheer

On Sunday morning, July 21, I faced a room of people from families with Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA), an inherited blindness caused by mutations in any of at least 18 genes. It was the final session of the Foundation for Retinal Research s bi-annual LCA family conference, and I was there to discuss the history of gene therapy. But I zapped through that quickly, because the future is much more intriguing.

Exome sequencing identified the rare mutation that causes Gavin Stevens hereditary blindness (Leber congenital amaurosis, or LCA). (Troy Stevens)

The excitement pervading the room that day was palpable, following a day of scientific updates, and not only because those with young children were soon to visit Sesame World and the sights of Philadelphia.

Jennifer and Troy Stevens exemplified that hope. Two years earlier, at this conference, they d learned that researchers had been unable to identify a mutation behind their toddler Gavin s blindness. Now they know the name of their gene: NMNAT1. I ll return to their story.

The star of the 2010 conference had been 10-year-old Corey Haas and an energetic young sheepdog, both cured of LCA with gene therapy. This weekend, the stars were the new programs and technologies that would allow other families to join Corey s and not just those with blindness.

The rare disease community in the US collectively belies its name: at least 30 million people suffer from 7,000+ diseases, many so rare that they hover beneath the radar of big pharma. But maybe not for long, thanks to the following recent reasons to cheer:

#1: GENE THERAPY PENDING APPROVAL

On July 20, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) announced impending first approval of a gene therapy in the western world.

It s for lipoprotein lipase deficiency (LPLD). The enzyme normally breaks down tiny triglyceride-packed globules called chylomicrons, and its absence causes episodes of very painful pancreatitis that can be fatal. LPLD is an ultra-rare disease, striking 1-2 people per million. And the only treatment is a diet so low in fat that most patients can t stick to it.

The gene therapy, Glybera, consists of adeno-associated virus type 1 delivering an overactive variant of the LPL gene, injected into a leg muscle during a single day. But not many people have had it.

James Wilson, MD, PhD, developed the vector, AAV1, used in the lipoprotein lipase deficiency gene therapy. (University of Pennsylvania).

The research team, led by Daniel Gaudet, MD, PhD, a professor of medicine at the University of Montreal, with colleagues from Amsterdam Molecular Therapeutics (recently replaced by privately-held UniQure), reported a two-year follow-up of 14 adult patients receiving 100 billion to 1 trillion viruses. And it seems to have worked, depending upon how one assesses success.

The triglycerides dropped, but after 60 days they trended back up. The primary endpoint had failed, but the secondary endpoint was recurring episodes of pancreatitis and they found a statistically significant, or close to it, decrease, explained James Wilson, MD, PhD, editor-in-chief of Human Gene Therapy and professor of pathology and laboratory medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, who developed the vector. Tracking a few more patients, work not yet published, may have led the EMA s Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use to finally recommend approval, after three rejections.

Tomas Salmonson, MD, acting chair of the committee, points to the new data as well as restricting use to the sickest patients in pushing the gene therapy forward. Our established ways of assessing the benefits and risks of Glybera were challenged by the extreme rarity of the condition and also by uncertainties associated with data provided.

For the additional study, the researchers looked at what was happening in the chylomicrons in the blood, and found that triglyceride level can fluctuate, contrary to assumptions of steady change. And that means something is happening that might explain the decrease in the painful episodes a very real measurement. Summed up Jean Bennett, MD, PhD, leader of one of the LCA2 clinical trials at Penn, It s a huge vote of confidence for the entire field of gene transfer.

Dr. Wilson agrees. The repercussions won t be at the FDA, where scientists make decisions based on data, he said, but on the willingness of big pharma to invest in gene therapy. Despite recent successes LCA2, hemophilia, adrenoleukodystrophy ? the pharmaceutical industry has been hesitant to fund gene therapy because it has lacked an approval. So-called regulatory uncertainty has been the biggest problem, and if there s no precedent, they can continue to say no. Biopharma is not interested in the ultra orphans. But I have a feeling we ll be seeing some activity, he added.

#2: FINDING HOMES FOR STALLED DRUGS

By August 14, researchers can submit pre-applications to the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) Discovering New Therapeutic Uses for Existing Molecules program. The idea is simple yet brilliant: match compounds that are languishing on company shelves to diseases with newly-discovered mechanisms. Such candidate drugs have passed initial safety tests but were dropped for business reasons, such as a tiny market, or because they didn t treat what they were intended to.

Corey Haas and Hannah Sames are ambassadors for the rare disease community, here signing their photos in The Forever Fix: Gene Therapy and the Boy Who Saved It. Corey has LCA2, successfully treated with gene therapy, and Hannah, awaiting hers, is one of 54 people in the world who has giant axonal neuropathy. (Sandy Andersen)

Since the announcement in June, eight industry leaders have signed on, offering an initial 58 compounds to find new therapeutic homes. And the need is compelling: of the 4,500+ diseases with recently-revealed mechanisms, only about 250 have treatments. If researchers funded through this effort can demonstrate new uses for the compounds, they could significantly reduce the amount of time it takes to get a treatment to patients in need, said Kathy L. Hudson, PhD, NCATS acting deputy director.

Everyone wins.

#3: SPEEDING FDA APPROVAL

On July 9, President Obama signed into law the FDA Safety and Innovation Act, which updates the 1983 Orphan Drug Act. The new law provides $6 billion over the next 5 years to assist the agency in evaluating new drugs and medical devices. The Act will speed access to new treatments and development of especially promising ones, and the Humanitarian Use Devices program will target those that treat rare diseases, giving priority to diseases of children. Treatments are desperately needed because most are serious, many are life-threatening, and about two-thirds of the patients are children, said Peter L. Saltonstall, president and CEO of the National Organization for Rare Disorders (NORD), which was critical in developing both acts.

The Act may be a lifesaver for people such as 8-year-old Hannah Sames, one of 54 people in the world known to have giant axonal neuropathy. The gene therapy trial that she will take part in is nearing phase 1, but the sponsoring not-for-profit, Hannah s Hope Fund, is about to run out of money.

#4: EASING INSURANCE ACCESS

When the Supreme Court upheld the Affordable Care Act on June 28, I scrolled through the relieved statements from various rare disease organizations. Thanks to the ACA, children like Hannah Sames and Gavin Stevens will not be penalized for their pre-existing conditions, nor face annual or lifetime insurance caps.

#5: IDENTIFYING DISEASE GENES

Exome sequencing can identify mutations when single-gene tests don t. The strategy sequences the protein-encoding part of the human genome in individuals, usually young children, whose syndrome has evaded recognition, searching for mutations passed silently from parents, with functions that could explain the symptoms. Once that s known, researchers can develop new treatments, or repurpose existing ones.

New exome-derived discoveries are being reported nearly weekly, some appearing in the media before the technical papers are published. A recent news release about a 4-year-old named Maya with a neurological disease, for example, made its way into many news reports and blogs, with a touching story and accolades. Yet none named the gene or its precise function the part I m most interested in.

In contrast to the incomplete Maya story, when John Chiang, PhD, director of the Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory at the Casey Eye Institute in Portland, Oregon told me he d discovered Gavin Stevens mutation among nearly 2,500 gene variants in the blind boy s exome, he asked that I not report it. That was 8 months ago the mutation is unveiled in a quartet of papers in the current Nature Genetics, after something of a turf war among four research groups.

Gavin s parents had heard about Dr. Chiang at the Foundation for Retinal Research meeting two years ago, where Jennifer had called him, distraught, after learning that single-gene tests couldn t explain their son s blindness. Dr. Chiang, who described his skill as I do the dirty work, I find the mutations, had helped several families after existing tests had fruitlessly, but expensively, probed the most common parts of only the most common genes. Dr. Chiang had first developed larger gene testing panels, and when those still didn t identify some families mutations, quietly sent their DNA off to the Beijing Genome Institute for whole exome sequencing.

Now that exome sequencing is commercially available in the U.S., Dr. Chiang cautions that it still doesn t help all families, and that costs can greatly exceed the oft-mentioned $1,000 pricetag when considering analysis. I would only recommend it as the last resort when all known genes are ruled out, he advised.

CODA

Karen Poulakos has Leber congenital amaurosis, and does quite well in her world of shadows. Gene therapy may return the vision that she remembers from her childhood. (Ricki Lewis)

On Saturday at the retinal research conference last weekend, I watched Jennifer and Troy beam as Eric Pierce, MD, PhD, director of the Ocular Genomics Institute in Boston and co-author of one of the Nature Genetics papers, talked about their mutation. Discovery of the gene, which affects cellular energy (NAD synthesis), is a starting point for gene therapy, and this particular candidate is a great target. The gene is small, and encodes an enzyme, said Dr. Pierce.

The next day, as my talk about the history of gene therapy wound down, I took stock of my audience. Two young women with canes sat in the front row. A few rows back sat Karen Poulakos, also with a cane, whom I d chatted with earlier.

Karen has Corey s disease, LCA2, but, at age 63, had been deemed too old for the gene therapy clinical trial two years ago. But things had changed, she d learned at the meeting, and she just might be eligible for the phase 3 trial coming up. Karen has lived a full life in her world of shadows, barely remembering when she could see better, and she s now contemplating what it might be like to see again.

As I collected my things, I marveled at the hope radiating from the faces in the room, sighted as well as not. And I thought that this is science at its very best. This is what it is all about, the molecules, the mice, the deciphering of nature s mechanisms: helping people.

SOLO TWITTER SPAT

Outspoken U.S. goaltender Hope Solo isn't happy about former player Brandi Chastain's commentary on NBC, and she's tweeting about it.

At one point, Chastain pointed out that a defender's responsibilities are: "Defend. Win the ball. And then keep possession. And that's something that (U.S. defender) Rachel Buehler actually needs to, I think, improve on in this tournament."

After the game, Solo rattled off four tweets about Chastain. She told Chastain to "lay off commentating about defending" and goalkeeping "until you get more educated" and "the game has changed from a decade ago."

"I feel bad 4 our fans that have 2 push mute," tweeted Solo, adding that she likes NBC soccer announcer Arlo White.

Chastain is one of the top all-time defenders for the U.S. team. A spokesman for NBC said the network would have no comment and that Chastain was unavailable for comment.

Cheney says picking Palin for VP was a mistake

(AP) ? Former Vice President Dick Cheney says it was a mistake for Republican Sen. John McCain to pick Sarah Palin as his vice presidential nominee.

Cheney says he liked Palin, but that she didn't pass the test of being ready to be president and that McCain's campaign didn't handle the vetting process well.

Republican challenger Mitt Romney is expected to announce a running mate in August. He is widely expected to choose someone perceived as competent but safe.

Cheney, whose own unpopularity was a flashpoint for the Bush administration, says there are two lists that candidates maintain. The bigger list includes politicians who want to be viewed as under consideration to boost their standing. Cheney says a second, much shorter list contains those who are actually being considered.

If The Seller Doesn't Have A Realtor Who Is Responsible For ...

questions

Q: I am looking at a house where the seller is not using a Realtor. Can I use my own? And who pays to have the purchase agreement drawn up?
?Gary, Mohawk, NY

A: Yes you can have your agent represent you. You just need to have them contact the owner directly. As to the purchase agreement, this should all be on your agent.
Matt Laricy is a Realtor? with Americorp Real Estate in Chicago, IL.

A: You most certainly can use your own!. Your realtor can get a one day listing agreement with the seller and agree on a reasonable reduced percentage for his services. You can also get a realtor to do the transaction paperwork as a Transactional Agent. You and the seller may share in the cost of having this realtor prepare the contract. You also can go to a real estate attorney and have them do it. Keep in mind you need a title company or lawyer to order title insurance and do a title search so that you are sure you get a clear title to the property. This is NOT a corner you should cut! You could wind up being responsible for some of the sellers old liens on his home. There is also a survey that may be required and the deed preparation among other standard procedures. Buying a home is an important step and spending the money now to do it right can save you a LOT of headaches later!
Joanne Bernardini is a Realtor? with Coldwell Banker-Casa Bella Realtors in Linwood, NJ.

A: I would have your Realtor draw up a purchase contract and submit it to the seller. Once the seller sees a ?real? offer they are more likely to allow an agent to be involved in the transaction.

Some sellers believe they are saving money by not using an agent. The reverse it true especially if there are errors in the transaction they may put them into a court action. Contact your agent today!

Good luck!
Jim Guido is a Realtor? with California Real Estate Internet Group in San Clemente. CA.

A: You can hire a buyer?s agent to help you buy this house. Who pays is just another point of negotiation. Your Realtor should contact the seller in advance to negotiate some kind of fee. If the seller refuses to participate in paying your agent, you can negotiate that as a condition of the purchase. You could also try offering a lower price to make up for the fee that you will pay your agent (assuming the seller is asking ?top dollar?). Worst case, you could end up paying full price for the house, and paying a fee to your agent on top of that. Bottom line: make sure you know how all of that will be handled BEFORE you make the offer.
Phil Lunnon is a Realtor? with Lunnon Realty in Lakewood, CO.

A: Dear Mohawk, Yes I would strongly recommend you do retain a good Realtor for your protection as well as the sellers
Dorene Slavitz is a Realtor? with The Real Estate Group in Culver City, CA and Torrance, CA.

A: We call sellers who are looking to sell their house by themselves either a FSBO (For Sale By Owner) or unrepresented seller. Typically their choice is based on money (trying to keep more in their pocket).

You are always able to have a Realtor represent you in the purchase of a home, but the important question that you must ask is if the seller will pay your Realtor?s commission. If you have a Realtor in mind, I would discuss the scenario with them and they can contact the seller on your behalf for the showing, but also ask about compensation. It must be agreed upon before and outside of the purchase agreement.

I am finding some sellers will pay the agent?s commission if I bring them a ready and willing buyer, we just have to ask :). If not, you can see about putting your agent?s commission on top of the sales prices so the seller still gets their bottom line and you don?t have to come out of pocket.

Hope this helps!
Kaera Mims is a Realtor? with Liz Moore and Associates in Newport News, VA.

Third funeral taking place for Colorado shooting victims

AURORA, Colo. (Reuters) - The third funeral in as many days was underway Friday in this Denver suburb for victims of last week's deadly shooting rampage at a midnight screening of the latest "Batman" film, this one for an 18-year-old man who had been bound for art college in the fall.

At an earlier candlelight vigil held in his honor, friends of Alexander J. "AJ" Boik recalled him a popular member of the recently graduated class of 2012 at Gateway High School in Aurora, just blocks from the site of the July 20 massacre at the local debut of "The Dark Knight Rises" at the Century 16 theater.

Boik was among 12 people, aged six to 51, who were killed when police say a 24-year-old graduate school dropout, James Eagan Holmes, opened fire on the packed theater. Fifty-eight more people were injured in the shooting, 12 of whom still remain hospitalized, five in critical condition.

Holmes, arrested within minutes of the rampage at his car in the theater's parking lot, is being held in solitary confinement in the local jail. He will be formally charged in the shooting on Monday.

Boik, who chaired the high school orchestra's viola section, was known also as an enthusiastic supporter of Gateway's sports teams, from boys' football to girls' volleyball, frequently showing up in body paint to cheer on the players.

An award-winning ceramic artist, he was bound for Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design in the fall to study art education. His funeral, the third memorial service so far for the 12 people killed, was at Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Aurora.

On Thursday, mourners crowded into a Denver Baptist church for the private funeral of 23-year-old Micayla Medek, which ended with sobbing family members clustered around her flower-covered coffin, some softly singing "You Are My Sunshine" while others blew kisses after the hearse that bore her body away.

The first funeral took place Wednesday. It was for Gordon Cowden, who at 51 was the oldest victim of the shooting. The self-employed real estate appraiser had attended the movie with his teenage daughters, both of whom escaped unharmed. A native of Texas, a separate memorial service was planned for Cowden in Austin on Friday as well.

Several more funerals and memorials were planned for other victims for the weekend.

STILL NO KNOWN MOTIVE

Authorities have yet to offer a motive for the bloodshed.

One clue under examination was a mysterious package that was delivered to the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, where Holmes had been enrolled as a doctoral student of neuroscience. The package was reported to contain a notebook detailing the shooting scenario.

According to a Fox News report, which cited an unnamed law enforcement source close to the investigation, the parcel was addressed to a psychiatrist on the university faculty and included hand-drawn illustrations of the massacre with pictures of stick figures shooting at other stick figures. The psychiatrist was not identified.

Meanwhile, Holmes' neighbors in the three-story apartment house where he lived were permitted to begin returning to their homes on Wednesday night for the first time since the building was evacuated on Friday, shortly after the shooting.

Residents were ordered out when Holmes' unit was discovered to have been booby-trapped with explosives capable of leveling the entire complex had they been detonated.

Methods Indians can use to earn extra money from the Internet ...

I am thinking of writing an article series which can be used as a guide to earn money from web sites. I am going to share the series 100% free, with the readers of this site.? But before, I expend considerable amount of time and effort, I have to know if the readers are willing to read such a series, if they are interested in knowing more about the topic. To this end, I have created a simple poll, if the number of ?Yes? vote is more than the ?No? votes, I will write the series.

Vote here

I know there are millions of articles out there which claim to show you the way, but the problems I saw with most of them are

1. They do not take Indian conditions in to account.

2. They are too spread out and hap hazard

3. Many contains out dated or wrong information

4. Many articles out there are used as a bait to scam people in to buying something, like an ebook.

5. Many skip vital steps and do not provide the real picture of what a person needs to do or goes through before they can even see a single paisa.

Why I think, I am qualified to write such a series?

1. I am building websites since 2001.

2. I started earning money by promoting websites from 2002.

3. Since 2003, I am running a company that is doing business online.

Why I want to write such a series and share it for free?

1. I firmly believe in sharing of knowledge. The more you share the more you learn.

2. I am a bit of a nationalist, it pains me to see fellow countrymen on various forums and freelancing websites trying to make money and getting paid a pittance for their effort.

3. I know the Internet is a gold mine and we Indians are barely scratching it, together we can build massive networks to promote each other?s websites and make a killing. (You will understand this point better, once you have read and understood the articles, that I will write).

4. There are many Indians out there earning thousands of dollars per month through their websites, but there is no concerted effort to get together and teach the trade to others and dominate the Internet.

Why Choose Direct Mail With Your Marketing Dollars? | Tri Win

Direct mail has been a popular part of the marketing mix for decades.?? Why?? When executed correctly, direct mail pieces can yield a much higher response rate than other forms of marketing.?? Direct mail isn?t just limited to letters or postcards.?? For example, membership cards, brochures and promotional items can also be mailed.
If you are considering direct mail in your business, here are 4 reasons that direct mail should be a part of your marketing strategy.

1)?Targeted Audience
Use your own mailing list or purchase one of ours ? sending mail to a specific audience will get you the results you desire.?? Lists can be explicit by not only geographical data, but also by options such as gender, ethnicity, income and buying interests.?? Increase response rates and improve ROI by using direct mail to target only those prospects that you want to do business with or who have already indicated an interest in your service or product.

2)?Personalization
Use personalization to speak directly to an individual, not to an entire mailing list. With digital printing, each mailing can be unique to the recipient.? These personalized messages can include references to past purchases, certain product or service preferences, personal interests, and even personalized promotional offers.? This kind of relevance drives increased response rates.

3)?Brand Awareness
Direct mail can be used to effectively build brands.? Utilizing a series of mail pieces with your logo and?colors will put your business? messages right into the homes of your audience.

4)?Measurable results
By coding your mailings, you can track results easily.? Tracking methods include, but are not limited to:? offer numbers, coupons, bar codes, phone numbers and even personal URLs.? Tracking can capture those that display an interest in your product, first time purchasers and subsequent orders.

Here Are Some Of The Apple Engineers ... - Business Insider

Have you heard about the Facebook phone?

Yep, it's still coming, and Facebook is still working with Taiwanese manufacturer HTC on it, Bloomberg reports.

The key detail in the Bloomberg story are the names of all the Apple engineers and designers Facebook has hired in its effort to design its own phone. (The?New York Times had reported that Facebook had hired some ex-Apple engineers, but didn't name them.)

Here they are:

Greg Novick, who helped develop the touch-screen user interface; Tim Omernick and Chris Tremblay, who also worked on the device?s software; and Scott Goodson, who helped create the stock-market application, according to people with knowledge of the hires.

Last year, Facebook also bought Push Pop Press, a digital publishing software maker co-founded by Apple alumni Mike Matas and Kimon Tsinteris, two designers who helped build the look and feel of the iPhone and iPad software. Matas is credited with creating the battery logo that shows on the iPhone screen when it?s charging.

Facebook also hired Apple design manager Chris Weeldreyer last month, though it's not clear if he's working specifically on mobile products.

One way Facebook could add a lot of mobile talent all at once: buying Web browser maker Opera.

Here's the statement Facebook always issues whenever it's asked if it's making a phone, which is fun to parse for its complete and utter lack of a denial:

Our mobile strategy is simple: We think every mobile device is better if it is deeply social. We?re working across the entire mobile industry; with operators, hardware manufacturers, OS providers, and application developers to bring powerful social experiences to more people around the world.

Satcher advocates midlevel dental providers to improve access to care

In 2000, then-Surgeon General David Satcher called national attention to ?a silent epidemic? of oral diseases, afflicting America?s most vulnerable citizens - poor children, the elderly and racial and ethnic minorities.

The crisis continues, Satcher said last week at a conference hosted by the Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta.

Under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, more than 5 million additional children will become eligible for dental benefits. But who will care for them? As it stands, the nation?s 30 million Medicaid children are already entitled to care, but the majority don?t get in to see dentists.

?We now have an opportunity to dramatically increase coverage,? said Satcher, now director of The Satcher Health Leadership Institute at Morehouse School of Medicine. ?But adding dental benefits will not translate into access to care if we do not have providers in place to offer treatment.?

Satcher went on to a major hot-button issue in the world of oral health care: the question of midlevel providers.

The problem is this: More than 49 million Americans are living in areas with a shortage of oral health care providers. It would take nearly 10,000 additional dental practitioners to meet the current needs, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration. The shortage of dental providers disproportionately affects people living in poor and rural areas.

With the Affordable Care Act, ?We now have an opportunity to improve access to dental health services,? noted Satcher. ?But how do we put in place a health care system that meets the needs of all??

Satcher spoke out for pilot programs such as those now being sponsored by the federal government and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation targeted at exploring alternative provider models such as dental therapists, who, with two or more years of intensive technical training, provide a range of services including preventive and restorative procedures and simple extractions.

The therapists work under the general, not direct, supervision of dentists and have been serving in other countries for decades. In 2005, dental health aide therapists, also known as DHATs, started working on tribal lands in Alaska as part of a longstanding federally authorized program that trains residents of Alaska Native tribal villages to provide basic care to their neighbors. In 2009, Minnesota became the first U.S. state to approve a law allowing such midlevel dental workers to practice.

?I think we need more dentists and I think we need more professionals who are not dentists but who can contribute to oral health services,? Satcher said.

Not everyone believes such midlevel providers are the answer, though. The American Dental Association (ADA) staunchly opposes them, arguing they are not qualified to perform procedures considered irreversible or ?surgical? such as drilling or extracting teeth.

And on July 25, the ADA released its newest reports (PDF) challenging the economic viability and effectiveness of such midlevel providers in five states that are considering them: Connecticut, Kansas, Maine, New Hampshire and Washington.

?Lawmakers and public health authorities should not rush to create midlevel dental providers who may be unable to fulfill their purpose of reducing oral health disparities,? cautioned ADA President William Calnon.

The executive director of a clinic in Minnesota was quick to dispute such findings.

Sarah Wovcha told DrBicuspid.com she has just hired a second therapist because she has been so impressed with the productivity of the therapist that is already working at her nonprofit clinic, Children?s Dental Services in Minneapolis. ?I was very pleased and not at all surprised because she?s well-trained,? said Wovcha.

And so the debate continues.

New Route for Tackling Treatment-Resistant Prostate Cancer | Epou

Posted by Eta Phi Sports on Jul 25, 2012 in Science | 0 comments

ScienceDaily (July 24, 2012) ? Scientists have identified what may be the Peyton Manning of prostate cancer. It?s a protein that?s essential for the disease to execute its game plan: Grow and spread throughout the body.

Like any good quarterback, this protein has command over the entire field; not only does it control cell growth in tumors that are sensitive to hormone therapy, a common treatment for men with advanced disease, but also in tumors that grow resistant to such treatment ? a dismal development that leaves men and their doctors with no good options to turn to.

In a study published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, a team led by scientists from the University of Rochester Medical Center found that the protein paxillin is a major player in prostate cancer, the second most common form of cancer in men. Though in the very early stages, the discovery is an important first step towards developing a treatment for men whose cancer prevails even after the most aggressive treatment.

"the holy grail in prostate cancer is to figure out why cells stop responding to hormone therapy," said senior study author Stephen R. Hammes, M.D., Ph.D., chief of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the Medical Center. Initially, hormone therapy, which starves tumors of the hormones that fuel their growth, works well and may lead to remission. but, according to the American Cancer Society, nearly all prostate cancers treated with hormone therapy become resistant over a period of months or years and the cancer makes an unwelcome comeback.

"Somehow, tumors find a way to grow even when their main power source is choked off," noted Hammes, also the Louis S. Wolk Distinguished Professor in Medicine. "Our work is exciting because we?ve identified a protein pathway that controls growth even in the absence of hormones and provides a completely new treatment target for the disease."

Hammes and first author Aritro Sen, Ph.D., Research Assistant Professor in the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, knew from their previous research that paxillin is important in prostate cancer, but they didn?t know why or how.

They found that under certain conditions the protein, which normally hangs out in the cytoplasm or gel-like substance that fills a cell, actually goes into the nucleus ? the cell?s genetic powerhouse. there, it?s an extremely commanding force, regulating signals that lead to the creation of cancer cells.

"this is the first time anyone?s shown that paxillin goes into the nucleus and controls gene expression," said Sen. "when we eliminated this protein from prostate cancer cells their growth was significantly arrested, but what surprised us most was that this effect was identical in both hormone therapy-dependent as well as resistant prostate cancer cells."

In typical tumors stimulated by male hormones called androgens, paxillin partners with the hormones to turn on genes that lead to the creation of more cancer cells. such tumors shrink, at least for a time, when subject to hormone therapy.

But for tumors that continue to grow despite hormone therapy ? called castration-resistant prostate cancer ? Hammes? team found that paxillin takes another route and connects with naturally occurring substances called growth factors to activate genes that produce more cancer cells.

Take paxillin out of the nucleus and growth comes to a halt: Without it, genes directed by androgens don?t get turned on, nor do genes directed by growth factors.

"Lots of pathways are being examined as scientists look for what makes a prostate cancer cell become castration resistant, but ours is a completely novel approach," says Hammes of the paxillin-mediated pathway.

Sen adds, "We have now found a common factor that regulates both hormone-dependent and castration-resistant prostate cancer cells."

Edward M. Messing, M.D., chair of the Department of Urology at the Medical Center and an expert in the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer, says "this is a potentially important observation since, as of now, most cancers eventually escape available means of inactivating androgens and their receptor. if paxillin proves to be a major new pathway, interfering with it may extend life or even cure men with far advanced prostate cancer, a stage of the disease which until now has always proved lethal."

The team conducted multiple tests to confirm the power of paxillin in prostate cancer. they found that paxillin is ramped up in tissue from human tumors, much more so than in normal cells. and in mice with human prostate cancer cells, getting rid of paxillin caused the tumors to grow more slowly.

Hammes says the next step is to figure out how to stop paxillin from getting into the nucleus, or to inhibit its activity once it?s in the nucleus. "Paxillin has important functions in the cytoplasm, like helping cells communicate with each other to form organs and other structures," he noted. "if we can target paxillin in the nucleus where it mediates cancer cell growth, but leave it intact in the cytoplasm so it can continue to do the important work it does there, that would be the goal."

Like any targeted cancer therapy, the team wants to hurt the cells that are proliferating, and leave the healthy cells that are standing still alone, says Hammes.

In addition to Hammes and Sen, Ismary de Castro, M.D. and Randall Rossi at the Medical Center contributed to the research. Donald B. DeFranco, Ph.D., University of Pittsburgh, Fang-Ming Deng, M.D., Ph.D. and Jonathan Melamed, M.D., new York University School of Medicine, and Payel Kapur, M.D. and Ganesh V. Raj, M.D., Ph.D., University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, also participated in the research.

The study was funded by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases at the National Institutes of Health and the University of Rochester Medical Center. the University has filed a patent application on using paxillin as a biomarker for prostate cancer diagnosis as well as using paxillin as a therapeutic target for prostate cancer treatment.
