Director of Global Operations, Carbon War Room

There does not have to be a choice between the economy and the environment to meet our 2020 goal of 17 gigatons of absolute carbon reductions. Position Overview:

The Director of Global Operations will lead strategic planning and guide the execution of active projects of the Carbon War Room. The Director will supervise and manage CWR's implementation teams to accelerate gigaton-scale, profitable solutions to climate change while maximizing return of philanthropic investment for our Funders.

Success will be initially measured by high quality resources attracted and deployed on active projects: but ultimately measurable in amount of capital attracted to climate change solutions as a result of Carbon War Room interventions in identified sectors.

Responsibilities:

KPIs:

  • Direct strategic planning for CWR's global projects
  • Create and drive project teams to implement projects in each of CWR's sectors*
  • Recruit and manage Project Leads, and oversee creation & growth of successful teams
  • Take accountability for achieving implementation and financial outcomes of active projects
  • Manage to appropriate project outcomes, metrics, data collection and reporting
  • In conjunction with development team, develop & present CWR requests for resources
  • Coordinate with Director of Communications to disseminate project milestones
  • Participate actively in effective governance, policies, and decision-making

Global Project Strategy and Planning ("Shape the Plans"):

  • Direct the strategic planning process for global project implementation across CWR's seven sectors, working with other Directors, subject matter experts, and other stakeholders as appropriate to develop and communicate project strategies with high impact, clear targets, measurable outcomes, and likelihood of successful implementation
  • Develop metrics, presentations and reports demonstrating strategic impact of global projects to Board, potential partners, strategic advisors, and funders

Project Management and Delivery ("Build & Manage world-class teams"):

  • Recruit, lead, manage, and coach project staff to deliver outcomes in accordance to agreed-upon strategic objectives; and measure progress toward targets
  • Team: Source, engage (& replace where necessary) project leads and other employees/ contractors/volunteers to execute global projects; on budget, with support of COO and HR
  • Partners: Develop and maintain productive relationships with implementation partners, including NGOs, businesses, academia and key individuals
  • Advisors: Build and consult with a strong advisory group including policy and subject matter experts, thought leaders, and drivers of change
  • Funders & Funding: In conjunction with Development team, develop proposals for funders to ensure adequate resources for project implementation (& be able to trim costs when appropriate)

Leadership, Management, and Governance ("Make things happen & prove it"):

  • Hold each active project accountable for timely accomplishment of deliverables, provide strategic guidance, ensure corrective actions are taken as necessary, monitor metrics, and report progress and challenges
  • Focus on creating long-term sector change, develop measurable targets, verifiable milestones and catalytic results
  • Support development of strong overall management processes and corporate decision-making to ensure and enhance overall corporate good governance

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required, relevant advanced degree or certification preferred
  • 10+ years of successful, executive level project management in global company, financial services, start-up/ fastgrowing firm
  • Entrepreneurial leader with ability to thrive in highly dynamic, fastpaced international environment
  • Experienced strategic planner with exceptional people and project management skills
  • Excellent written and oral communicator. Able to communicate complex strategy and business plans clearly to internal and external stakeholders
  • Well-organized, and very comfortable with computers (able to present ideas on word and ppt; modeling on excel)
  • Self-starter with ability to work independently and in teams
  • Able to lead diverse groups of staff, contractors, and volunteers
  • Knowledge of one or more areas of climate change and environmental funding a plus; passion for the mission a requirement

Reporting to Peter Boyd, COO - working alongside Director of Research and Director of Communications in small Senior Team

Location: Must be based in London, New York or Washington DC with regular travel and diverse settings

Compensation: Full-time role for Carbon War Room as a registered 501(c)3. Remuneration is stipulated as per contract and designed to be competitive.
