Retired Lieutenant Colonel John Nagl talked about the future end of large scale military operations in Afghanistan, and he responded to telephone calls and electronic communications. He recently wrote a New York Times opinion piece in which he argued that the war in Afghanistan could end in U.S. defeat, similar to Vietnam, or a "messy and unsatisfying" victory like Iraq. He said an unsatisfying end could provide a promise for greater stability in the country.
