Throwback Thursday: Back-to-School Beatitudes?10 Academic ...

30 Aug

Update, August 2012

Next week, ?my full time grind starts again, after a year of being on fellowship, which allowed me the time to think, read and begin the process of writing my first book. I?m grateful for the time. It has been a year of re-learning old lessons, numbers 1, 2, 4, ?and 5 below to be exact. This year, I have worked through a terrible case of imposter syndrome, learned over and over again to be patient with my own ideas, recognizing that good ones take time to develop, come to understand that gentleness with myself is the prerequisite for ?and not an impediment to productivity, and finally, when I landed in the hospital, began to prioritize self-care. I try to remind myself ?regularly to trust the process, to trust myself, and to trust God. ?(On good days, I can do all three.) ? In the meanwhile, ?I started riding bikes again for the first time since childhood, took frequent trips to the beach, spent some extra time kicking it with the CFs this summer, and started juicing. They are all small ways that I have affirmed my own value with intention and deliberateness. I hope if you haven?t already, that you will do the same. It?s never too late to begin.

Original Post

Graduate school was nothing short of an emotional and physical rollercoaster. I spent the first semester depressed and homesick, years 2-4 battling a stress-induced stomach condition that caused me to lose not only 75 pounds but also a whole semester of work. I healed just in time to begin my dissertation, wherein I gained back most of the weight I lost, and experienced a nasty case of stress-induced shingles just as I was rounding third. I love my work, and I?m glad I made it, but as we all head into a new academic year, here are a few things I wish I?d known?

  • Be confident in your abilities.
    • If you feel like a fraud, you very likely are suffering from?impostor syndrome, a chronic feeling of intellectual or personal inadequacy born of grandiose expectations about what it means to be competent. Women in particular suffer with this issue, but I argue that it is worse for women-of-color (particularly Blacks and Latinas) who labor under stereotypes of both racial and gender incompetence. The academy itself also creates grandiose expectations, given the general perception of academicians as hypercompetent people. Secret: Everybody that?s actin like they know, doesn?t really know. So ask your question. It?s probably not as stupid as you think. Now say this with me: ?I?m smart enough, my work is important, and damn it, I?m gonna make it.?
  • Be patient with yourself.
    • Be patient with your own process of intellectual growth. You will get there and it will all come together. You aren?t supposed to know everything at the beginning. And you still won?t know everything at the end (of coursework, exams, the dissertation, life?).
    • Getting the actual degree isn?t about intellect. It is about sheer strength of will and dogged determination. ?Damn it, I?m gonna walk out of here with that piece of paper if it?s the last cottonpickin? thing I do.? That kind of thinking helps you to keep going after you?ve just been asked to revise a chapter for the third time, your committee member has failed to submit a letter of rec on time, and you feel like blowing something or someone up.
  • Be your own best advocate. Prioritize your own professional needs/goals.
    • You have not because you ask not.? You have to be willing to ask for what you need. You deserve transparency about the rules and procedures of your program, cordial treatment from faculty, staff and students, and a program that prepares you not only for the rigors of grad school but also for the job market (should you desire a career in academia).? But folks won?t hand it to you on a silver platter. You have to build relationships, ask questions, and make demands.
    • Figure out your writing process (the place [home, coffee shop, library], time [morning, afternoon, night], and conditions [background noise, total silence, cooler or warmer] under which you work best and try to create those conditions as frequently as possible during finals, qualifying exams, and dissertation.
    • Your self-advocacy will often be misperceived as aggression and anger, entitlement or selfishness.?Don?t apologize.?
  • Be kind to yourself.
    • Reward yourself frequently.? Most of us need positive affirmation of a job well done, but for long stretches, especially during exams, dissertation, and the job market, the rewards elude us; and often given the time crunch, once we conquer the mountain, there is little time to enjoy the view before it?s time to trudge back down and start climbing the next one. All that hard work? in high stakes conditions for anti-climactic ends can take a toll on your psyche. So be kind to yourself. Figure out the things you really like and make sure to enjoy them as much as is possible and healthy.
  • Be proactive about self-care.
    • Figure out your non-negotiables. For me, sleep is non-negotiable. I must have it. I don?t do all nighters. I also generally don?t do weekends, so I adjust my schedule accordingly. What are your non-negotiables?
    • Take advantage of on-campus therapy services. My last two institutions have had women-of-color thesis and dissertation support groups. Consider joining.
    • Cultivate a spirit-affirming practice. Grad school/the academy is a mind-body-spirit endeavor. So meditate, pray, exercise, do yoga, go to church, cook a good healthy meal. Do whatever you need to do to keep your mind, body, and spirit in balance.
  • Be a friend/comrade to others and let them do the same for you.
    • Build community with colleagues inside or outside your department.
    • Build community with non-students/non-academics. You need folks who live life outside the dungeon. They will affirm you and help you keep things in perspective.
  • Be willing to get CRUNK!
    • If the environment is hostile, it is most probably characterized by?microaggressions?of various sorts.? Racial microaggressions ??brief and commonplace daily verbal, behavioral, or environmental indignities, whether intentional or unintentional, that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative racial slights and insults toward people of color? are quite common for women of color, but microaggressions can be used in sexist, heterosexist, or ableist ways as well.? A microaggressive environment demands resistance of various sorts. So do you and be you. Unapologetically. ?Keep a copy of Sister Audre near by so you can make sure you?re channeling your legitimate anger productively, and then,?get crunk?if necessary.
  • Be better not bitter.
    • Fail forward. Being the overachievers that we are, we tend not to deal with failure well. It tends to become an indicator to us of our intelligence, worth, and competence. (See #1). But failure is a part of the process. Unless you are incredibly, exceptionally lucky, you will hit a snag in a course, while writing the proposal, on the dissertation, submitting a journal article or submitting a book. Two tips: take the time to process, particularly for big issues like proposals, dissertation chapters or books. Cry, scream (not at your committee or editor), go to a kickboxing class. And then dust yourself off and try again. Look at the suggestions offered; determine their validity. Heed them or disregard them depending on your best judgment, and then proceed to the next step.? And one more thing?don?t let the resentment fester. It may be well-justified but it simply isn?t productive. Just think of it as hazing, and for your own sake, let it go.
    • A lot of anger comes from bitterness at mentors who have not met our expectations. But all mentors are not created equal. Some will build your confidence, some will give you hell,? some will go above and beyond, but a mentor is there to illumine the process and give you tools to be successful, not to be your friend. So have multiple mentors; know the difference in function; and adjust your expectations accordingly.
  • Be tight. Bring your A-game.
  • Be a light. As you make your way, show the sisters and brothers behind you how it?s done, so maybe they won?t have as many dark days as you?ve had.

A little musical inspiration for the journey...

Alright, fam. Please share your survival tips for grad school newbies and veterans and junior faculty as well.

maryland juice: Feds Moving 450 Treasury Jobs from MD to WV ...

WEST VIRGINIA TO GAIN MARYLAND JOBS: The Washington Post yesterday reported that the federal government plans to move 450 Treasury Department jobs out of Maryland to neighboring West Virginia. The rationale for the "consolidation" is that it would help the agency more efficiently use its facilities (excerpt below):
WASHINGTON POST: The federal government is relocating 450 Treasury Department jobs from Hyattsville to Parkersburg, West Virginia as part of a move to consolidate operations....

According to the General Services Administration, which manages federal real estate, the move will help Treasury meet a directive from President Obama for agencies to more efficiently use their facilities....

After hearing the news from Treasury officials, U.S. Rep. Donna Edwards (D-Md.) issued a press release Wednesday expressing disappointment and suggesting that workers receive help finding new jobs....

Senators Barbara Mikulski and Ben Cardin, as well as Representatives Steny Hoyer, Chris Van Hollen and Elijah E. Cummings, all Democrats, attached statements to Edwards? also condemned the move.

MASSACHUSETTS TRIES TO RETAIN JOBS MOVING TO MARYLAND: But Senator Barbara Mikulski proposed a similar consolidation of 200 fisheries management jobs from Massachusetts to Maryland, and that plan is seemingly facing a great deal more resistance. Either the Federal government believes in efficiency through geographic consolidation of its workforce or it doesn't. See excerpts from The Gloucester Times below:
GLOUCESTER TIMES: U.S. Sen. Barbara Mikulski?s idea to relocate the Northeast Regional Office of the National Marine Fisheries Service from Gloucester to near NMFS? headquarters in Silver Spring, Md., would be costly and ?could be disruptive? and inefficient, NOAA reported to Congress this week....

The U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee approved a fiscal 2013 spending plan for NOAA in April that included an amendment to close the Northeast Regional Office in Gloucester and move the bulk of fisheries management, administration and law enforcement to Silver Spring, Md....

Opposition to the move locally was based on the economic impact of having more than 200 of NOAA?s mostly highly paid employees working and living in and near the city....

Will Maryland become the victim of a double-standard when it comes to the Federal government consolidating offices?

140 missing, 6 rescued as boat sinks off Indonesia

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) ? Rescuers were searching for scores of asylum seekers Thursday, a day after their boat sank off the Indonesian coast. Six people were rescued, but more than 140 remained missing.

The emergency was the latest in a series created by a growing human smuggling trade in which thousands of would-be refugees from countries including Afghanistan, Iran and Sri Lanka travel from Indonesia to Australia in overcrowded fishing boats.

More than 90 died when two boats sank within a week in June and more than 300 have lost their lives making the perilous journey across the Sunda Strait between Indonesia and the Australian territory of Christmas Island since last December.

In the latest incident, a boat reportedly carrying 150 asylum seekers sank off the main Indonesian island of Java on Wednesday.

The crew of a merchant ship taking part in the search, Liberian-flagged APL Bahrain, spotted survivors in the water early Thursday 75 kilometers (45 miles) southwest of Java and rescued six, Home Affairs Minister Jason Clare said.

"There are grave fears for a lot more," Clare told reporters.

The Bahrain's captain, Manuel Nistorescu, told the Fairfax Media website that he also saw what he believed were bodies in the water.

"I think I saw some of them dead," he said.

Nistorescu said the six rescued, all Afghan men, had been in the water for almost 24 hours. There were also women and children aboard the asylum-seeker boat when it sank, he said. The rescued men appeared to be in good condition and were given overalls from the ship to wear, he said.

Nistorescu said he was about to abandon the search when he heard whistles and yelling from the dark water.

Australian Maritime Safety Authority spokeswoman Jo Meehan said another four merchant ships and an Australian military aircraft had joined the search and rescue operation.

Two Indonesian government ships, an Australian navy patrol boat and two planes from Australia were to join the search later Thursday, she said.

Australian authorities received a call by satellite phone from someone aboard the missing boat early Wednesday requesting help. The person said there were 150 people aboard and the vessel had engine trouble. The boat was then 15 kilometers (9 miles) off Java, officials said.

Indonesian authorities launched a search with two boats and a helicopter but found no trace of the boat by late Wednesday.

Meehan said Australia had offered ships and aircraft to help the Indonesians search Wednesday, but that the offer was not taken up.

The survivors were spotted after Australian authorities expanded the search area based on drift patterns.

Clare, who is the minister responsible for Australian rescue authorities, said Indonesia should not be criticized for failing to find survivors on Wednesday.

"It is very hard to find people that are in distress on a little wooden boat in the middle of the Sunda Strait," he said.

Richard Marles, Australia's junior foreign minister, said the emergency highlighted the need for Australia to urgently establish detention camps in the Pacific island states of Papua New Guinea and Nauru to hold asylum seekers who reach Australia by boat.

The government hopes to send the first asylum seekers to a tent camp on Nauru in September in a strategy to deter others from attempting the same boat journey.

"We are confident that when that happens, we will see a reduction in the number of people making the journey," Marles said.

Clare said people smugglers were rushing to get asylum seekers on boats headed for Australia before the off-shore detention camps were opened.

"People smugglers are running a closing down sale," he said.

NASA's Dawn spacecraft prepares for trek toward dwarf planet

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? NASA's Dawn spacecraft is on track to become the first probe to orbit and study two distant solar system destinations, to help scientists answer questions about the formation of our solar system. The spacecraft is scheduled to leave the giant asteroid Vesta on Sept. 4 PDT (Sept. 5 EDT) to start its two-and-a-half-year journey to the dwarf planet Ceres.

Dawn began its 3-billion-mile (5-billion kilometer) odyssey to explore the two most massive objects in the main asteroid belt in 2007. Dawn arrived at Vesta in July 2011 and will reach Ceres in early 2015. Dawn's targets represent two icons of the asteroid belt that have been witness to much of our solar system's history.

To make its escape from Vesta, the spacecraft will spiral away as gently as it arrived, using a special, hyper-efficient system called ion propulsion. Dawn's ion propulsion system uses electricity to ionize xenon to generate thrust. The 12-inch-wide ion thrusters provide less power than conventional engines, but can maintain thrust for months at a time.

"Thrust is engaged, and we are now climbing away from Vesta atop a blue-green pillar of xenon ions," said Marc Rayman, Dawn's chief engineer and mission director, at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. "We are feeling somewhat wistful about concluding a fantastically productive and exciting exploration of Vesta, but now have our sights set on dwarf planet Ceres.

Dawn's orbit provided close-up views of Vesta, revealing unprecedented detail about the giant asteroid. The mission revealed that Vesta completely melted in the past, forming a layered body with an iron core. The spacecraft also revealed the scarring from titanic collisions Vesta suffered in its southern hemisphere, surviving not one but two colossal impacts in the last two billion years. Without Dawn, scientists would not have known about the dramatic troughs sculpted around Vesta, which are ripples from the two south polar impacts.

"We went to Vesta to fill in the blanks of our knowledge about the early history of our solar system," said Christopher Russell, Dawn's principal investigator, based at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). "Dawn has filled in those pages, and more, revealing to us how special Vesta is as a survivor from the earliest days of the solar system. We can now say with certainty that Vesta resembles a small planet more closely than a typical asteroid."

The mission to Vesta and Ceres is managed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., for the agency's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. Dawn is a project of the directorate's Discovery Program, which is managed by NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala.

UCLA is responsible for the overall Dawn mission science. Orbital Sciences Corp. of Dulles, Va., designed and built the spacecraft. The German Aerospace Center, the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research, the Italian Space Agency and the Italian National Astrophysical Institute are part of the mission's team. The California Institute of Technology in Pasadena manages JPL for NASA.

Enlisting the AIDS virus to fight cancer

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? Can HIV be transformed into a biotechnological tool for improving human health? According to a CNRS team at the Architecture et R?activit? de l'ARN (RNA Architecture and Reactivity) laboratory, the answer is yes. Taking advantage of the HIV replication machinery, the researchers have been able to select a specific mutant protein. Added to a culture of tumor cells in combination with an anticancer drug, this protein improves the effectiveness of the treatment at 1/300 the normal dosage levels.

Published in PLoS Genetics on 23 August 2012, these findings could lead to long-term therapeutic applications in the treatment of cancer and other pathologies.

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which causes AIDS, uses human cell material to multiply, primarily by inserting its genetic material into the host cells' genome. The distinctive characteristic of HIV is that it mutates constantly, and consequently generates several mutant proteins (or variants) in the course of its successive multiplications. This phenomenon allows the virus to adapt to repeated environmental changes and resist the antiviral treatments that have been developed so far.

At the IBMC (Institut de Biologie Mol?culaire et Cellulaire) in Strasbourg, the researchers of the CNRS Architecture et R?activit? de l'ARN laboratory had the idea of using this multiplication strategy to rechannel the effects of the virus for therapeutic purposes, in particular the treatment of cancer.

They first altered the HIV genome by introducing a human gene that is found in all cells: the gene for deoxycytidine kinase (dCK), a protein that activates anticancer drugs (2). Researchers have been trying to produce a more effective form of dCK for several years. Through HIV multiplication, the CNRS team has selected a "library" of nearly 80 mutant proteins and tested them on tumor cells in the presence of an anticancer drug. The results have enabled them to identify a dCK variant that is more effective than the wild-type (non-mutated) protein, inducing the death of tumor cells in culture. In combination with this protein, the anticancer drugs showed identical effectiveness at 1/300 the dose. The possibility of reducing the doses of anticancer drugs would palliate the problems posed by their components' toxicity, reduce their side effects and, most importantly, improve their effectiveness.

One advantage of this experimental technique is that the mutant proteins were tested directly on cells in culture. The next step in the years to come will be preclinical (animal) studies on the isolated mutant protein. In addition, this experimental system using a normally life-threatening virus is likely to lead to a great many other therapeutic applications.

Crytek thinks next-gen could fail without F2P | Lazygamer .:: Console ...

Whoreface

Free to play is the next big thing in games, with numerous top tier developers and publishers ? including Crytek ? embracing the model. It allows developers to release a game for free, making their money through in-game microtransactions. It?s proven to be rather lucrative ? and has the added side effect of nullifying software piracy. It?s not something you find much on consoles right now, but it should be ? and might be a necessary model for platform holders to embrace come next-gen, if Crytek is to be believed.

"I hope for them that they do," Crytek?s Cevat Yerli said when asked if Microsoft and Sony?s next consoles would feature free t play option. "If they don?t then it?s going to be a tough time for them.

"It?s quite a challenge for those companies logically because they rely so heavily on retail to sell the hardware and to sell the games where the margin for retail really is," Yerli continued. "If they would forgo their entire retail business and go digital free-to-play, then they would not be selling any more Xboxes as well. There?s a chicken and egg thing there. And they have to make radical calls."

Microsoft?s and it excessively walled garden Xbox Live Arcade has resisted the idea of free to play games and MMO?s ? though it?s soon to receive its first free to play title in the 15v15 game Happy Wars, which may indicate a change in attitude at the Redmond giant. Sony?s been a little more open to the idea with DC Universe Online, fantasy RPG Free Realms and its CCP developed Dust 514, an interesting F2P shooter-MMO hybrid that ties in magically with Eve Online. The biggest problem with Free to play games, says Yerli, is their public perception as low quality titles with an emphasis on paying to win ? but Yerli wants to change that with Warface, its impending F2PFPS.

"We know that free-to-play games have a bad image," he said. "They have a bad reputation ? it?s pay to win, it?s low quality. I completely get that, but we are making free-to-play that?s high quality. It?s CryEngine 3, it?s a big investment."

Do you think consoles need to muscle in on the Free to play action, or is Crytek ? who?s committed to an entirely F2P future ? just trying to push its own interests? I think the idea behind it?s nice ? but there?s the possibility that, should Free to play games really take off, that they?ll make retail AAA games go the way of the dodo ? doing more harm to the videogame industry than good.

E-Retailing through Social Media | CIOPakistan.com - Business ...

(For PCWorld Pakistan)

Fed up with the conventional way of purchasing things? By definition, the ?conventional? way of doing anything is playing by the rules. Shopping, the conventional way, would therefore involve the ritualistic way of visiting the marketplace. Whilst some enjoy the practice, others get ?browned off? by waiting endlessly in the long-lived queue for one?s turn to arrive. Since time immemorial, this is how routine buying and selling has been takes place all around the world. However, when internet surfaced out, it vivified how conducting business is actually possible outside the conventional ?brick-and-mortal? model. Ushering in a new age of business, an addition of the letter ?e? revolutionized trade referring to those few that utilized ?the dot.com? handle.

Over the two decades, the phenomenon has evolved at a pace that is now looking at the possibility of bridging communication between machines over the internet, through web 3.0, having? passed through the wave of web 2.0 successfully, a proof of which is the ?social media? bubble. As the bubble continues to grow, a larger number of e-retailers have patched an online extension of their business on these social media sites. Yet when profiling a localite, e-shopping still appears murky.

In Pakistan, the concept of e-shopping or e-retailing has never existed. This doesn?t mean that it is prevalent now. The barricades that are impeding its emergence and existence are many, although computers and internet can be found in almost every household of the country. The major reason, however, is the computer and technology illiteracy in Pakistan because of which the majority is unaware of the immense promise of e-retailing and e-commerce concepts. It is the ignorance of the public that is holding the utility stores, businesses, and retailers to go online. Nevertheless, there exists a hope, a means, a solution, and a tool, which is ?a-e- -o-

E-Retailing: Bird-Eye-view of the Pakistani Market

Simply put, e-retailing is an act selling of goods electronically. However, it has been defined as the ?concept of selling of retail goods using electronic media, in particular, the internet.? There are things that are essential ingredients of e-retailing. Therefore, before commencing e-retailing, it is important to ensure the presence of following vital components: Right Revenue-Generation Model, an attractive Business-to-Consumer (B2C) E-Commerce Portal, and a penetration of the internet, shopping cart, E-Catalog, and a payment gateway.[1]

Expecting Pakistanis to e-shop without any presumed hindrances still seems to be a fantasy. This is largely due to ?our psychological state? that keeps us from engaging in any form of trade whether it includes goods or money, when the act is isn?t tangible. The fate of e-retail is doomed for similar reasons.

There is hardly any superstore or shop that falls in the category of e-retailers. As mentioned above, most of the population is computer illiterate and even if they have knowledge of internet and computers, they use offline methods for shopping. An upsurge of social media has challenged the mindset a bit. As the top-most visited site in Pakistan, Facebook fanpages has given a new hope to the e-retailers to engage the largest number of buyers off a single platform.

Social Media: Good Omen for E-Retailers?

Still puzzled what is ?a-e- -o- and why increased use of social networking sites is a like a silver lining in Pakistan? The good-old Facebook explains this best. Although the platform has largely been used for social networking only till date, it has become a tool for marketers and advertisers aiming to earn a mileage off the budget set for promotions, bearing the least expense. The sharing feature on Facebook comes handy in particular. For instance if someone purchases something online through Facebook and spreads his/her experience through word of mouth or via sharing, the purchasing is likely to grow. Henceforth, this mutually benefits both the platform and the e-retailer. As stated by Vice President of Partnerships and Platform Marketing at Facebook, ?We now have a direct link between sharing on Facebook and revenue generation at e-commerce sites.? [2]

Facebook, by allowing retailers and companies a platform for displaying, promoting, and selling their products, acts as catalyst in introducing and making common the concept of e-retailing in the country. It serves as a tool for marketers and businesses and a source of information and communication for people. The more e-commerce takes place through Facebook, the more the public will be able to learn about the online methods of shopping.

However, will the e-retailers be able to fulfill the essentials of e-retailing as given above, and even if they do, will the terms like e-catalog and shopping cart, be understood by the people? Moreover, the privacy concerns of people remain where they were, even if they are purchasing through Facebook. It will still be a challenge for e-retailers to attract and convince individuals to buy things online and to continue e-retailing as it is quite difficult to make customers feel satisfied in the environment where the goods they are purchasing are not available physically.

New to the world of Leukemia | The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society ...

Hi and welcome to the board you never want to join.? Sorry you had to find your way here; and this diagnosis is so new to you your head must be spinning.? Your emotions are totally understandable and we've all cycled through some variation of how you feel.

?

My daughter was diagnosed 7/30/10 with high risk Pre B ALL and will be done with treatment 11/30/12.? She was almost 12 at dx, but has Down syndrome and is not near her chronological age cognitively.? Every child reacts differently, but the first four weeks were absolutely miserable for Lauren.? I'd say the first four weeks were miserable, the next two weeks were bad, and then she started feeling better and the bad times were not as long lived.? They were just now and then.

?

I seriously wondered if it was worth treating her the first couple weeks because she was so miserable.? She was in pain, had mouth sores, sores on her rectum, lost control of her bladder and bowels, her bones ached and she screamed every time she sat on the toilet.? Between the meds, the IV fluids, the medication for high blood pressure and to help her kidneys and liver she was a MESS.? Every time she walked to the bathroom she moaned and cried.? She was zoned out in her own little world and it was awful.? I felt like I had "lost" her and didn't know if she'd ever come back.? It felt like her sparkly little soul had died.? But the good news is, she came back!? Her old sparkly little self started to come back about 4 weeks into treatment.? We also were able to take her off the meds for blood pressure and kidney and liver after about 4 weeks.? There were still some rough times, but not as consistently bad.? After that first month we were up and down, had times she felt good enough to go out for a movie and to restaurants, etc.? She missed all but a few days of school that entire school year, but I don't think any time during treatment was as bad for her as the beginning.?

?

I have never heard that a 2 year old can't be in pain or nauseated.? And quite frankly, I don't believe it and would tell your team that.? I'm sure there are other people on this board who have young children and I'll be surprised if they say their child didn't experience pain.? Think about the different cries babies and toddlers have. With my 2 year old grandson I can tell if his cry means he is just trying to get attention, he is tired, or he is in pain.? We used oxycodone in the first couple months for pain and then haven't needed it much since.? We also used zofran to control nausea and vomiting.? We still have to use zofran and bendadryl when she has spinals or she gags and retches for hours afterwards.?

?

Best of luck to you.? There is also a Facebook group called A.L.L. Moms that is a wealth of information and allows for quicker replies.? You need to be a FB friend of someone in the group to join.? Email me at robbieharding@aol.com if you want to join the group.

Now We Want Realtor To Allow Us To Sell House Ourselves And Let ...

questions

Q: We had our house listed with a realtor and the agent told us house had been shown five times. The vacant house has security system that emails us when system is turned off and on. It never was. We told the agent the house had not been shown ever. Agent said she?d check into it but never got back with us. A few weeks later we received call about house from a buyer who?d seen our FSBO ad from before we listed property. We directed buyer to realtor. Our agent was on vacation so agent had an ?associate? show the house. Showing resulted in offer and a counter from us. We eventually asked our agent to ask buyer a few things because we felt the deal wasn?t going well. At that time our agent told us she cannot directly speak with our buyer because agents ?associate? was buyers agent. We felt badly betrayed and immediately retracted our counter and directed realtor to drop our listing. Were we being unreasonable or not and how about agent telling us house had been shown five times when it had not ever been shown and we have to documentation proving it.
?Steve, Deltona, FL

A: I am so sorry to hear about your situation.

I would see an attorney; Realtors are not supposed to give legal advice. The listing you signed MAY have a clause that provides a commission to your agent for a period of time even though you have cancelled the listing.

Contact the agent?s broker and let them know what is going on. They may be interested in pursuing a solution so their company?s reputation isn?t damaged.

You might also contact the Department of Real Estate in Florida and submit an official complaint.

I wish you well.

Former SC Gov. Sanford engaged to ex-mistress

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) ? Former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford confirmed Sunday he is engaged to the Argentine woman he secretly left the state to visit under the cover story he was hiking the Appalachian Trail.

Sanford said a statement announcing his engagement provided to CNN is accurate.

"The only comment I'll stand by is that there was a statement sent to CNN and I stand by its accuracy. I don't know anything beyond that," Sanford told The Associated Press on Sunday. "I'd love to talk but we're going to end up in no-man's land."

Sanford was a rising Republican political star before he vanished from South Carolina for five days in 2009. Reporters were told he was hiking the Appalachian Trail. But when he returned to South Carolina, the father of four admitted that he was instead in Argentina with Maria Belen Chapur, whom he later called his soul mate.

"I've been unfaithful to my wife. I developed a relationship with what started as a dear, dear friend from Argentina. It began very innocently as I suspect many of these things do, in just a casual email back and forth in advice on one's life there and advice here. But here recently, over this last year, it developed into something much more than that," Sanford said in explaining the affair.

The episode ended in divorce from his wife, Jenny, and derailed the political career of a GOP conservative with presidential aspirations. He was governor from 2003-2011.

The affair also prompted impeachment hearings in 2009 after the state ethics commission looked into Sanford's use of state planes, campaign cash and first-class travel. The former South Carolina congressman ended up paying $74,000 in ethics fines and reimbursed the state for the investigation and for travel and personal expenses.

Obama says he wants to preserve Medicare

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama says the Medicare program is about keeping promises to millions of seniors who have put in a lifetime of hard work.

Obama is using Saturday's radio and Internet address to discuss a surging campaign issue. He says his goal is to strengthen Medicare and preserve the program for future generations.

Obama makes no mention of Republican rival Mitt Romney but says Republicans in Congress would turn Medicare into a voucher program that wouldn't keep up with costs. The GOP ticket has accused Obama of cutting more than $700 billion from Medicare to pay for his health care law.

In the Republican address, Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky says the nation is being hurt by "the looting of the Treasury and 20 years of deficit spending."

Amber Zuniga, 18, Creates 'The Ultimate Boyfriend Application'

With the first day of classes quickly approaching in this final week of August, 18-year-old Amber Zuniga understood the importance of finding a good back-to-school boyfriend. In an effort to help her fellow single friends distinguish between the studs and duds, she created "the ultimate boyfriend application" -- which quickly went viral on Tumblr and got picked up by bigger media outlets, such as Buzzfeed.

Scroll down to see the larger (and hilarious) image.

The application is "for anyone who might have a crush on someone, or thinks a boy is attractive, or perhaps even has an unhealthy infatuation -- since the application is a tad overboard," Zuniga told The Huffington Post. "But let's not forget Beyonc?. I think she really carried me through the endless hours of strenuous cutting and glueing it took to perfect the application. That woman is gold."

While Zuniga admitted that she has yet to actually use it herself, she assured us that in the future, should a "tall, tan, and handsome guy just waltz into [her] life and offer [her] some french fries," she'll make sure to hand it to him upfront.

And for any single ladies or gents who do not have this foolproof application handy when they spot a potential boyfriend candidate (tsk, tsk), no need to panic -- Zuniga's got you covered.

"If they bring you pizza, they've got potential," she said. "If they let you have the last slice, they're a keeper."

Amen to that.

In ways big and small, life has changed for Ryan

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. (AP) ? It's safe to say that until recently Republican Paul Ryan had never visited a lemonade stand with a dozen Secret Service agents in tow. And he almost certainly hadn't discussed the tightness of his shirts during a national radio interview. Or been asked to play "word association" by a TV reporter.

Yes, it's a whole new world for the Wisconsin congressman.

In ways both large and small, life has changed for Ryan in the two weeks since Mitt Romney named him as his running mate. Before that, Ryan was an up-and-coming but little-known House member still untested on the national stage.

Now, he's a GOP vice presidential hopeful whose days are a blur of rallies, fundraising events, local television interviews and plane flights, during which he reads news accounts of the campaign and pores over policy briefing papers on his iPad. Some things, of course, haven't changed. He still adheres to his strict exercise regimen each morning ? only these days he does cardio in the hotel fitness center or works out in his room, instead of the House gym. A single Miller Lite in the evening is his only indulgence.

"Everybody said this would drain me, the road, but it's not. It's great. It actually gives you energy," Ryan told reporters this week on a flight from Virginia to North Carolina, one of a handful of excursions he's made to the press cabin on his plane.

As he campaigns across battleground states in the days leading up to the Republican National Convention, Ryan draws large crowds at his events and is a natural onstage, often appearing more comfortable than Romney before an audience and delivering the campaign's talking points with ease. At a fundraiser in Springfield, Mo., this week, Ryan lent a human touch to the Romney campaign's oft-repeated claim that President Barack Obama likes to promote class warfare by attacking the former Massachusetts governor's wealth.

"When I was a kid growing up working at McDonald's, de-tasseling corn, waiting tables, painting houses, things like that, it never occurred to me that I was stuck in some station, fixed in some class," Ryan told donors. "We shouldn't be preying on people's emotions of fear, envy and anxiety, putting people in a class, dividing people. That's why I don't think this going to work for President Obama."

Ryan also has shown that he knows how to stir up a local crowd.

At a rally in Pittsburgh, he waved a "terrible towel" ? the fan prop of the Pittsburgh Steelers football team, even though Ryan himself is a diehard Green Bay Packers supporter. And after a fundraiser in Raleigh, N.C., Ryan purchased a beverage from a group of neighborhood kids running a lemonade stand as his security detail hovered close by.

To be sure, Ryan does what many politicians do, indulging in the same sorts of verbal sleights of hand.

He criticizes pending defense cuts even though he supported a House budget agreement that would allow such cuts to take place. And Ryan blames Obama for excess spending and government debt even though he voted in favor of several spending programs pushed by former Republican President George W. Bush that helped explode the federal deficit, such as the Medicare prescription drug plan.

Ryan largely avoids national news outlets in favor of local interviews in the most competitive states, in part to reach undecided voters in those states but also to avoid the kind of grilling from national reporters that might take him off message. In Roanoke, Va., he told a reporter for a local outlet that he preferred asparagus to cake and agreed to a session of "word association" that produced a question about fast-food chain Chick-fil-A, which had become the focus of controversy over gay marriage.

"Good chicken," Ryan said.

But the local vs. national press strategy doesn't always work.

Ryan found that out when parrying tough question from a Pittsburgh reporter about his views on abortion and rape in the wake of comments by Rep. Todd Akin, the Missouri Senate candidate who stirred a firestorm when he asserted that victims of "legitimate" rape can physically resist pregnancy.

"Should abortions be available to women who've been raped?" KDKA reporter Jon Delano asked Ryan, who has co-sponsored tough anti-abortion legislation with Akin.

Ryan responded: "Rape is rape."

When he has allowed national outlets to interview him, he's tended to stick to conservative-friendly hosts like Sean Hannity and Laura Ingraham, who asked Ryan about a host of issues ? including his clothing choices on the road.

"You went from very boxy clothes to the slim fit," Ingraham said. "Those shirts are a little tighter than the usual Paul Ryan shirts. The girls at our studio notice."

"Some of 'em are big and some of 'em fit real well," Ryan said.

Ryan's visits to reporters on his plane have been rare but memorable. He came bearing cookies on one occasion and came another time to bid farewell to a reporter decamping to Vice President Joe Biden's campaign. Reporters thrust microphones in his face each time to pepper him with questions.

"Every time I come back here, are you guys going to always do that?" he asked. "Does it have to be so formal?"

In Ryan's new world, the answer is yes.

New model gives hands-on help for learning the secrets of molecules

ScienceDaily (Aug. 24, 2012) ? For biology researchers, the complex world of molecular proteins -- where tens of thousands of atoms can comprise a single protein -- may be getting clearer with the help of a new soft, transparent, and squishy silicone model they can hold in their hands.

Its advantage over traditional computer and solid models is that it is mostly transparent and easy to manipulate, which will help researchers more intuitively understand protein structures, positions, and interactions. The models will enable researchers to quickly and collaboratively see, touch, and test ideas about molecular interactions and the behavior of proteins. These insights are keys to innovation in drug design because they help generate discussion about what a particular molecular surface might be like and how a protein is shaped and structured.

The models also allow researchers to simulate docking maneuvers involving molecules known as ligands and their partners, a chemical binding step that can turn a biological process on or off.

This boost to molecular modeling comes from Masaru Kawakami, Ph.D., a biophysicist researcher at JAIST (Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) in Ishikawa, Japan. It appears in the current issue of the American Institute of Physics (AIP) journal Review of Scientific Instruments.

"Because my new model is soft, users can deform the model and experience ligand binding or protein-protein association, which has never been possible with other physical molecule models," said Kawakami. "I believe my model would be an effective discussion tool for the classroom or laboratory to stimulate inspired learning."

Ingredients You Never Want to See on Your Nutrition Label ...

The year was 1950, and The Magic 8-Ball had just arrived in stores. It looked like a toy, but it wasn?t. It was a future-telling device, powered by the unknown superpowers that lived inside its cheap plastic shell. Despite a bit of an attitude??Don?t count on it,? ?My reply is no??it was a huge success. Americans, apparently, want to see their futures.

A few decades later, Congress passed the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act that, among other things, turned the 45,000 food products in the average supermarket into fortune-telling devices. Americans inexplicably yawned. I?m trying to change that. Why? The nutrition label can predict the future size of your pants and health care bills.

Unfortunately, these labels aren?t as clear and direct as the Magic 8-Ball. Consider the list of ingredients: The Food and Drug Administration has approved more than 3,000 additives, most of which you?ve never heard of. But the truth is, you don?t have to know them all. You just need to be able to parse out the bad stuff. Do that and you?ll have a pretty good idea how your future will shape up?whether you?ll end up overweight and unhealthy or turn out to be fit, happy, and energized.

While researching the new Eat This, Not That! 2013: The No-Diet Weight Loss Solution, I identified 8 ingredients you never want to see on the nutrition label. Should you put down products that contain them? As the Magic 8-Ball would say: Signs point to yes.

BHA

This preservative is used to prevent rancidity in foods that contain oils. Unfortunately, BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole) has been shown to cause cancer in rats, mice, and hamsters. The reason the FDA hasn?t banned it is largely technical?the cancers all occurred in the rodents? forestomachs, an organ that humans don?t have. Nevertheless, the study, published in the Japanese Journal of Cancer Research, concluded that BHA was ?reasonably anticipated to be a carcinogen,? and as far as I?m concerned, that?s reason enough to eliminate it from your diet.

You?ll find it in: Fruity Pebbles, Cocoa Pebbles

Parabens

These synthetic preservatives are used to inhibit mold and yeast in food. The problem is parabens may also disrupt your body?s hormonal balance. A study in Food Chemical Toxicology found that daily ingestion decreased sperm and testosterone production in rats, and parabens have been found present in breast cancer tissues.

You?ll find it in: Baskin-Robbins sundaes

Partially Hydrogenated Oil

?I?ve harped on this before, but it bears repeating: Don?t confuse ?0 g trans fat? with being trans fat-free. The FDA allows products to claim zero grams of trans fat as long as they have less than half a gram per serving. That means they can have 0.49 grams per serving and still be labeled a no-trans-fat food. Considering that two grams is the absolute most you ought to consume in a day, those fractions can quickly add up. The telltale sign that your snack is soiled with the stuff? Look for partially hydrogenated oil on the ingredient statement. If it?s anywhere on there, then you?re ingesting artery-clogging trans fat.

You?ll find it in: Long John Silver?s Popcorn Shrimp, Celeste frozen pizzas

FIGHT FAT WITH FAT! Some fats, like trans fat, will pad you with extra pounds, but other types can help you shed unwanted weight. See for yourself?pick up these 5 Fatty Foods that Make You Skinny today!

Sodium Nitrite

Nitrites and nitrates are used to inhibit botulism-causing bacteria and to maintain processed meats? pink hues, which is why the FDA allows their use. Unfortunately, once ingested, nitrite can fuse with amino acids (of which meat is a prime source) to form nitrosamines, powerful carcinogenic compounds. Ascorbic and erythorbic acids?essentially vitamin C?have been shown to decrease the risk, and most manufacturers now add one or both to their products, which has helped. Still, the best way to reduce risk is to limit your intake.

You?ll find it in: Oscar Mayer hot dogs, Hormel bacon

Caramel Coloring

This additive wouldn?t be dangerous if you made it the old-fashioned way?with water and sugar, on top of a stove. But the food industry follows a different recipe: They treat sugar with ammonia, which can produce some nasty carcinogens. How carcinogenic are these compounds? A Center for Science in the Public Interest report asserted that the high levels of caramel color found in soda account for roughly 15,000 cancers in the U.S. annually. Another good reason to scrap soft drinks? They?re among The 20 Worst Drinks in America.

You?ll find it in: Coke/Diet Coke, Pepsi/Diet Pepsi

Castoreum

Castoreum is one of the many nebulous ?natural ingredients? used to flavor food. Though it isn?t harmful, it is unsettling. Castoreum is a substance made from beavers? castor sacs, or anal scent glands. These glands produce potent secretions that help the animals mark their territory in the wild. In the food industry, however, 1,000 pounds of the unsavory ingredient are used annually to imbue foods?usually vanilla or raspberry flavored?with a distinctive, musky flavor.

You?ll find it in: Potentially any food containing ?natural ingredients?

Food Dyes

Plenty of fruit-flavored candies and sugary cereals don?t contain a single gram of produce, but instead rely on artificial dyes and flavorings to suggest a relationship with nature. Not only do these dyes allow manufacturers to mask the drab colors of heavily processed foods, but certain hues have been linked to more serious ailments. A Journal of Pediatrics study linked Yellow 5 to hyperactivity in children, Canadian researchers found Yellow 6 and Red 40 to be contaminated with known carcinogens, and Red 3 is known to cause tumors. The bottom line? Avoid artificial dyes as much as possible.

You?ll find it in: Lucky Charms, Skittles, Jell-O

THE DOMINO EFFECT: Sugar doesn?t just come in the form of cookies and candy. Discover the insidious ways it can creep into your diet with 9 Sneaky Sources of Sugar.

Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein

Hydrolyzed vegetable protein, used as a flavor enhancer, is plant protein that has been chemically broken down into amino acids. One of these acids, glutamic acid, can release free glutamate. When this glutamate joins with free sodium in your body, they form monosodium glutamate (MSG), an additive known to cause adverse reactions?headaches, nausea, and weakness, among others?in sensitive individuals. When MSG is added to products directly, the FDA requires manufacturers to disclose its inclusion on the ingredient statement. But when it occurs as a byproduct of hydrolyzed protein, the FDA allows it to go unrecognized.

HP slides after weak outlook, brokers cut price targets

(Reuters) - A host of brokerages cut their price targets on Hewlett-Packard Co's stock, after the No. 1 PC maker posted an $8.9 billion loss and cut its earnings outlook for the year, echoing concerns raised by rival Dell Inc about faltering demand for PCs.

HP shares, fell 7.9 percent to a three-week low of $17.68 on the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday before recovering to $17.98 in morning trade.

HP took a $10.8 billion charge in the quarter, mostly due to a writedown of its EDS acquisition, and said the weaker outlook was because of a faltering PC market and tough economic conditions in Europe and China.

HP's poor prospects mirror those of rival Dell Inc, which slashed its full-year earnings outlook on Tuesday, saying customers cut back on computer purchases ahead of the launch of Microsoft's Windows 8 software.

RBC analysts said inventory drawdown ahead of the Windows 8 launch hit sales of PCs at HP but Baird Equity Research also pointed to a switch by consumers to alternative devices.

Notebooks are losing market share to Apple Inc's iPads and other tablets.

"We think that both Dell and HP face an uphill task in the PC market, which is affected both by weak macro and changing consumer preference with no credible tablet product," BMO Capital Markets analyst Keith Bachman wrote in a note.

HP and Dell are also struggling to defend their PC market share from Asian rivals such as Lenovo Group Ltd and Acer Inc.

FBN Securities analyst Shebly Seyrafi said there are still many challenges for HP, such as increased competition, a backlog of printers in its inventory and a large exposure to the weak European market.

Printing and imaging sales at HP fell 3 percent in the third quarter.

Jefferies analyst Peter Misek said inventory correction in the printer segment will take several quarters to resolve and it increasingly seems smartphones and tablets are reducing overall demand.

HP consolidated its PC and printing segment in March, which now comprise almost 50 percent of the company, Baird said.
