WASHINGTON ? Few recipients of the presidential Medal of Freedom have carried more cultural and artistic weight than Bob Dylan, who received the recognition from President Barack Obama on Tuesday at the White House for contributions to American life and culture.

The gravel-voiced Dylan, who turned 71 last week, has both pleased and baffled fans and critics for five decades. His 40-plus albums have featured folk anthems, country hits, rock classics and even religious tunes now sung in church pews and by gospel choirs.

?There is not a bigger giant in the history of American music,? Obama said during a packed ceremony in the East Room of the White House.

Photographers and reporters jockeyed for a glimpse of the music icon, and even politicians used to the limelight seemed star-struck. The famously retiring Dylan wore dark sunglasses throughout the event and sat bow-tied and stone-faced, not even cracking a smile during lighthearted moments.

Along the way in Dylan?s 50 years of show business, there have been documentaries made about his place in American culture and dozens of books, some by respected historians, written to analyze the man and his music. College professors offer entire courses on his writing.

?Nobody else in serious literature or otherwise has captured that pastiche that is American like Dylan has captured it. He knows it, he?s nailed it. He pushes us toward something better than we are,? said Frances Hunter, a creative writing professor at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro. She teaches an elective poetry course on Dylan?s writing.

Boston University humanities professor Christopher Ricks devoted an entire book to Dylan?s religious writings in 2004, ?Dylan?s Visions of Sin,? which looked at the deadly sins and cardinal virtues through the prism of Dylan?s songs.

Sean Wilentz, a Princeton University American history professor, added to the cultural legacy of Dylan with ?Dylan in America,? showing the historical influences that shaped the Minnesota-raised songwriter.

Hunter and other academics have been pushing for Dylan to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.

?Last year they gave it to a very obscure Swedish poet,? she noted, arguing that Dylan?s musical staying power may be working against him for literature?s highest honor. ?I think fame hurts. You can be too famous. The literary snobs come out.?

If the Nobel judges have ignored Dylan, the White House, serious academics and the broader art world clearly have not. Art galleries feature his paintings. Hollywood honored Dylan?s art with the 2007 film ?I?m Not There,? where famous actors take on different Dylan personas from various times in the artist?s life and career.

Dylan has won 11 Grammy Awards, pop music?s top recognition. He?s also won an honorary Pulitzer Prize in 2008 for his ?profound impact on popular music and American culture, marked by lyrical compositions of extraordinary poetic power.?

Perhaps the best testament to Dylan?s importance is that his work has been recorded more than 3,000 times by other artists, a nod of respect more direct than any award presented. A White House pianist played his song, ?Don?t Think Twice, It?s All Right,? as guests entered the East Room.

?Bob Dylan is one of the most important songwriters in music history. And that is the entire spectrum of recorded music history,? said Howard Kramer, curatorial director at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland. ?As an American artist, he?s essential to the entire narrative of American musical tradition.?

Born Robert Allen Zimmerman in Duluth, Minn., on May 24, 1941 ? not in nearby Hibbing as President Obama incorrectly mentioned Tuesday ? Dylan grew up along the Mesabi Iron Range. There was nothing to suggest that the son of Jewish middle-class parents would someday be honored at the White House.

To the contrary, his earliest foray into music, in the late 1950s, imitating Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis, was hardly greeted with enthusiasm. Robert Hewitt, four years younger than Dylan and a brother of a Dylan schoolmate, recalled how English teacher Testla Lundeen closed down a Dylan performance at a Hibbing High School talent show.

Police arrest man sleeping in car in church lot | Mercer Island Police Blotter

Police arrested a 25-year-old man at 2:53 a.m. on Tuesday, May 15, in the parking lot of Mercer Island Covenant Church in the 3200 block of 78th Avenue S.E. The man was sleeping in his car and had a $350 misdemeanor Enumclaw warrant for using and delivering drug paraphernalia. He was taken to the Issaquah Jail.

May 8

Car crash: A woman drove into a tree at high speed at 12:05 p.m. in the 8400 block of S.E. 26th Street, next to Luther Burbank Park. The woman was suicidal and was taken to a hospital. She was cited for reckless driving, on investigation.

Pedestrian accident: A Mercedes-Benz backed into two pedestrians at 1:30 p.m. in the Tabit Square parking lot on S.E. 27th Street. The driver, 22, was following a friend and both entered the parking lot in the wrong direction. When they realized their mistake, they both began backing out. The 22-year-old driver did not look behind her at first, and struck a woman, 33, who was leaving Zaw Pizza with her young daughter. A Zaw Pizza employee, 25, who was carrying out the customer?s pizzas, was also knocked down. The mother sustained injuries to her elbow, and possibly head and neck, and the employee had an injured arm that she reported as sore and painful. Both pedestrians were treated at the scene, and the driver was cited for unsafe backing.

Arrest: Police arrested a 54-year-old driver on an outstanding misdemeanor warrant at 7:12 p.m. in the 3900 block of 82nd Avenue S.E. The suspect was driving with a suspended license, and he was booked into the King County Jail.

May 10

Car prowl: Someone stole $1,900 worth of items out of a Jaguar in an apartment complex carport, overnight, in the 3000 block of 81st Place S.E. There was no evidence of forced entry, and the thief stole a survival kit, jackets, a GPS unit and an iPod.

Theft: Someone stole a package that UPS delivered to the doorstep of an 85-year-old woman?s residence in the 4400 block of West Mercer Way. The woman?s son confirmed with UPS that the package had been set on the doorstep. The parcel contained a heart-shaped sculpture.

May 11

Accident: A female bicyclist struck the side of an SUV at 8:39 a.m. in the intersection of 81st Avenue S.E. and North Mercer Way. The driver, 34, obeyed the stop sign and said the way was clear when he looked both ways, but as he was turning, a bicyclist entered the crosswalk from the sidewalk and rode into the side of the vehicle. The bicyclist, 25, reported dizziness and was taken to a hospital.

Drugs: Police arrested a 26-year-old woman at 10:15 p.m. in the 7800 block of S.E. 28th Street after checking her license plate. The woman was driving with a suspended license and gave up a jar with marijuana inside after police detected an odor of marijuana. Police searched her vehicle with consent and confiscated two glass marijuana pipes.

May 12

Theft: A 44-year-old Mercer Island woman?s credit and debit cards were stolen during a house party in Mt. Vernon between 12 and 4 p.m. The thieves made several purchases, under $1,500, with the cards.

Collision: A Mercer Island Fire Department aid unit responding to an emergency call at 1:57 p.m. in the 7300 block of S.E. 24th Street was passing vehicles at 15 mph when its side mirror collided into the mirror of an oncoming SUV that had stopped for the aid unit. The SUV?s mirror had minor paint damage. The aid unit continued on to the call.

May 13

Arrest: Police stopped a vehicle for parking and report of sale violations at 5:33 p.m. in the 2400 block of 84th Avenue S.E. The 27-year-old passenger was arrested on an outstanding $5,000 warrant for driving while intoxicated, and she was booked into the King County Jail.

Assault: A 16-year-old male was booked into the King County Jail Juvenile Detention Center after punching his parents at 7:30 p.m. at home. His father reported the incident.

Theft: A 69-year-old Mercer Island man left his wallet at the north QFC self-checkout lane at 4 p.m., but no one turned it in. The man cancelled his credit cards, but lost $1,000 in cash contained in the wallet, along with his ID and Social Security card.

Capsized canoe: Mercer Island Marine Patrol responded to a capsized canoe at 2:54 p.m. A couple and their 3-year-old child had fallen into the water. The Marine Patrol rescued the family out of the water and recovered the canoe. There were no injuries, and the canoe was not damaged.

May 14

Burglaries: A police officer responded to a burglary at Shorewood Heights in the 9000 block of West Shorewood Drive at 9:20 a.m. Someone pried the window of an office loose, and broke it, overnight. The alarm was not activated, but no apparent entry was made. The cost to replace the window is estimated at $400.

A North-end home in the 2400 block of 65th Place S.E., near Secret Park, was burglarized after the residents ? a couple ? left at 10 a.m. They returned at 1:20 p.m. In the meantime, burglars ransacked the house and filled a pillowcase with stolen items: a Canon camera and 55-250 lens, Mac computer and Dell laptop. Police lifted fingerprints from the outside edge of the French doors, and a metal drawer-pull with a scalloped brush-nickel finish, taken from the closet dresser, was placed into evidence.

Bike found: A damaged 10-speed Panasonic ?Sport 500? bicycle was found at 10:15 a.m. in the 8800 block of S.E. 60th Street.

Arson: A Shell station employee in the 7800 block of S.E. 28th Street refused a sale of cigarettes, at 7 p.m., to two male teenagers who did not have ID and looked to be 17 years old. Both boys then went into the restroom, and an hour later, a customer reported a burned towel dispenser in the bathroom.

Theft: Aladdin Bail Bonds sent a delinquent notice to a 31-year-old Mercer Island man claiming that he owed $115 for a bond that he had never posted in February. The victim went to Aladdin, which showed him a driver?s license with his information. The license, however, had a different photo, height and weight.

May 15

Theft: A 48-year-old Mercer Island woman reported that someone withdrew $1,900 from her Bank of America account after May 10 without her authorization. A bank teller in Citrus Heights, Calif., permitted the withdrawal.

Malicious mischief: Three windows were broken out of a school portable at Lakeridge Elementary, in the 8200 block of S.E. 78th Street, sometime overnight. The vandals painted a line of silver spray paint on the back wall of the portable and left the paint can behind, on the ground, where two broken windows were found.

May 17

Theft: A 20-year-old Mercer Island man stole a carton of cigarettes from a vendor?s shipment inside the Jacksons Shell Station on 278th Avenue S.E. at 9:38 p.m. He did not pay for the carton when he left the store. Evidence includes a security video.

May 18

Arrest: Police arrested a 22-year-old Mercer Island man at 9:22 a.m. at his residence in the 2500 block of 81st Avenue S.E. He was arrested on a misdemeanor warrant and transferred into the custody of Bellevue police.

Thefts: Several fraudulent charges were placed on a 65-year-old Mercer Island woman?s credit card between 12 and 4 p.m. Someone also transferred money from her Bank of America checking account to one of her lines of credit.

A jacket and cell phone were stolen out of an open convertible in a parking lot in the 7600 block of S.E. 27th Street around 3:30 p.m. The cell phone was inside the jacket. The victim, a 47-year-old Mercer Island man, had left his car unattended.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Across the vast Pacific, the mighty bluefin tuna carried radioactive contamination that leaked from Japan's crippled nuclear plant to the shores of the United States 6,000 miles away ? the first time a huge migrating fish has been shown to carry radioactivity such a distance.

"We were frankly kind of startled," said Nicholas Fisher, one of the researchers reporting the findings online Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The levels of radioactive cesium were 10 times higher than the amount measured in tuna off the California coast in previous years. But even so, that's still far below safe-to-eat limits set by the U.S. and Japanese governments.

Previously, smaller fish and plankton were found with elevated levels of radiation in Japanese waters after a magnitude-9 earthquake in March 2011 triggered a tsunami that badly damaged the Fukushima Dai-ichi reactors.

But scientists did not expect the nuclear fallout to linger in huge fish that sail the world because such fish can metabolize and shed radioactive substances.

One of the largest and speediest fish, Pacific bluefin tuna can grow to 10 feet and weigh more than 1,000 pounds. They spawn off the Japan coast and swim east at breakneck speed to school in waters off California and the tip of Baja California, Mexico.

Five months after the Fukushima disaster, Fisher of Stony Brook University in New York and a team decided to test Pacific bluefin that were caught off the coast of San Diego. To their surprise, tissue samples from all 15 tuna captured contained levels of two radioactive substances ? ceisum-134 and cesium-137 ? that were higher than in previous catches.

To rule out the possibility that the radiation was carried by ocean currents or deposited in the sea through the atmosphere, the team also analyzed yellowfin tuna, found in the eastern Pacific, and bluefin that migrated to Southern California before the nuclear crisis. They found no trace of cesium-134 and only background levels of cesium-137 left over from nuclear weapons testing in the 1960s.

The results "are unequivocal. Fukushima was the source," said Ken Buesseler of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, who had no role in the research.

Whole-istic Living: Creating A Health Plan

Creating a health plan is an easy way to start baby stepping your way into a healthier lifestyle. Nobody expects you to make a 100 degree turn around over night, and if you are use to eating bad food, and an overall unhealthy way of life, it is not good for you to make such drastic changes at once.

To make a good health plan one should take into consideration of implementing a body, mind and spirit approach. Preventative and holistic measures can go a long ways in keeping you healthy and away from doctors! This is not to say you will never need a doctor, but doing what you can to stay healthy and in good mental state of mind, will have you not needing them near as much. I am no doctor and this is not medical advice, if you feel you have something serious, you should go in and get it checked right away.

When creating a health plan you should try to implement (starting slowly of course of what you think you can easily change) some or all of the following.

• Healthy Menu- What kind of healthy foods do you want to start incorporating into your diet and how many times a week? Do you want vegetarian, vegan, whole foods or raw foods? How many times a week will you in the beginning stages allow yourself the processed or junk foods that you enjoy and you feel would be hard for you to give up? Is there certain foods you want to incorporate for their health benefits such as fighting cancer, building immune systems, energy boosting?

• Outdoor activities- Sunscreens have bad things in them we absorb into our skin, yet we need the Vitamin D we get from the sun. We should plan on getting outside daily for at least 30 minutes a day. To help boost our Vitamin D we may want to take a Vitamin D supplement or eat plenty of Vitamin D rich fish such as Salmon or Mackerel at least 3 times a week. Perhaps you could incorporate an exercise routine with being outside such as running, or brisk walking 2 miles a day, biking 5 miles a day or a gentle Tao Chi or Yoga routine outside.

• Music Therapy- Here you may want to spend 15 minutes a day with and listen to types of music that lift your spirits and make you feel good. Or you can listen to special healing vibrational types, drumming or what ever makes you feel at peace or gives you joy.

• Exercise- This should be a cardio workout and could be broke up into a variety of different exercise forms to prevent boredom or too much stress on your body. Again this could be incorporated with the getting outside in the sun time. Do an exercise routine that you feel good about and want to do!

• Spirituality- This does not necessarily mean religious pursuits, for I am aware not everyone is religious, however finding things we really feel a deep spiritual connection to daily can be an important step in staying healthy.This may be going to church, finding ways to help others, marveling at something we find beautiful or even spending time in nature.

• Massage Therapy- Our skin is sensitive and touch can have amazing healing qualities or allow us to get rid of excess stress at the end of a hard day. You may not be able to afford a? massage therapist, but perhaps you could? arrange a night with a friend, spouse or the family exchanging massages. Try a gentle tickle too, just barely gliding the tips of fingers over the persons skin..this has amazing results for someone suffering from back pain or chronic muscle pain as it seems to confuse the nerves in a wonderful way.

• Meditation- Some time should be found a few times a week at least for reflection, deep breathing techniques and quieting our minds for at least 15 minute sessions.

• Laughter- Watch comedies, tell jokes, read jokes, do whatever makes you laugh, as the saying goes laughter is the best medicine! Try to find time and things to do that make you laugh as often as you can throughout each and every day! Laugh until you cry, laugh until it hurts, Laugh until you burst!

So start creating your health plan today keeping these things in mind to try to incorporate and you will be well on your way to a healthier life. As with anything this goes without saying, if you have certain bad habits such as too much sugar, smoking or drinking? a plan of action to stop these bad habits should be part of your plan as well!
